The Meeting: Dan Storvick from Frontier and Kristi Halverson PDG from Kruse Way Club in Oregon were visiting Rotarians. Val Ripley and George Steiner were welcomed back. Ray distributed the membership survey to members not attending last week. Great Extractions: Jane Anne was Sarge and Susan Cohen toted the spittoon. Two Gunsite hats were auctioned off for $35 and $20 to Doug A. and Val. Greg B. and the editor both paid tardy bucks. Val paid for sucking up to the Sarge earlier. Happy Bucks: Greg R. was happy for his LA trip. George was happy to be back from Minnesota. Art was looking forward to a Colorado River trip with Interacts. Dan B. wasn’t sure about Carmen’s “paining”. Josh was happy about all the grasshoppers. Lots of just and always happy’s. Visiting Rotarian Kristi Halverson won the Raffle.
Our Speaker: Greg Raskin introduced Dr. David Hess, President of the Jewish Community Foundation of Greater Prescott (JCF). Since 1998 the Foundation has carried out the Jewish life and belief of charitable giving in the Prescott community. The Foundation has supported local organizations that provide necessary services to the community’s needy, underprivileged, or homeless as well as supporting education and the arts. In 2016, the JCF awarded over 11 grants ranging from $2,000 - $7,500 each. Since 2007 the JCF, in conjuction with the American Israel Friendship League, has sponsored educational missions to Israel for community leaders of the greater Prescott area. More than 60 local leaders have traveled on three of these historic Missions. They toured important Holy sites, leading universities, and major museums of Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. The delegates met with government officials, scholars in Middle East affairs, and terrorism experts. They also interacted with members of the Knesset and judges of the Israeli Supreme Court.
In the early 1930s Herbert J. Taylor set out to save the Club Aluminum Products distribution company from bankruptcy. He believed himself to be the only person in the company with 250 employees who had hope. His recovery plan started with changing the ethical climate of the company. He explained: The first job was to set policies for the company that would reflect the high ethics and morals God would want in any business. If the people who worked for Club Aluminum were to think right, I knew they would do right. What we needed was a simple, easily remembered guide to right conduct - a sort of ethical yardstick- which all of us in the company could memorize and apply to what we thought, said and did. I searched through many books for the answer to our need, but the right phrases eluded me, so I did what I often do when I have a problem I can't answer myself: I turn to the One who has all the answers. I leaned over my desk, rested my head in my hands and prayed. After a few moments, I looked up and reached for a white paper card. Then I wrote down the twenty-four words that had come to me. I called it "The Four-Way Test" of the things we think, say or do.
Adoption Of The Test By Rotary In the 1940s, when Taylor was an international director of Rotary, he offered the Four-Way Test to the organization, and it was adopted by Rotary for its internal and promotional use. Never changed, the twenty four word test remains today a central part of the permanent Rotary structure throughout the world, and is held as the standard by which all behavior should be measured. The test has been promoted around the world and is used in myriad forms to encourage personal and business ethical practices. Taylor gave Rotary International the right to use the test in the 1940s and the copyright in 1954.

Welcome to yet another great Rotary Week!
Wow, I hope you all were as impressed with our speaker, David Hess, as I was. Even as a history buff I learned a few things about Israel and the region that I was not aware of. Great talk! Great program! Can’t wait for the upcoming presentation this week.
The Board of Directors (BOD) approved the new Communications Chair position and as noted earlier we are very fortunate to have Susan Cohen agree to take this on. She will be asking some folks to join her on the new committee so be ready to step up to this very important function for our club.
We had an update at the BOD meeting on the recent membership committee survey and we had a pretty good response rate. Thank you to all who responded as this will help us to take a look at where we stand.
However, brace yourself for one more response. There is some additional information that I feel we will need in order to get a clear picture. Later today I will be sending you a questionnaire via email and will be asking for information in some other areas as well as more in depth comments. Between the two I feel we will have a good solid picture of where we are and can start work on where we want/need to go. Please work on it at home and return to me within two weeks.
Wish us good fortune at the US-Mexico conference next weekend: Todd Clancy, Barbara Oemcke and I are attending. Art Harrington will be there also.
Unfortunately due to concerns about possible insurance issues due to recent decisions by RI about parties with alcohol and add to that a later return by our most gracious past hosts the Steiners, we will not be able to put together an Octoberfest party this year. Perhaps next year. Please join me in thanking the Steiners for all their previous hosting. I think everyone will agree that they made it a great ride while it lasted.
