Meeting Highlights Oct 4
Sgt. at Arms:  Great Extractions: Sergeant Rod Cordes drew able assistance from Josh Walker who was all spiffed up with a bow tie and suspenders for “Nerd Day” at school.
Those paying up happy bucks included: Jane Anne Shimizu happy the Gunsite Alumni Shoot is over. Eric Chester noting that an 1867 bill moved the Territorial capital from Prescott to Tucson. Bud Ackerman happy for Greg Barstad fixing his roof. Wayne Wolfe happy for a new hearing aid and noting that his wife’s birthday wasn’t on the birthday list. Norm Samuelson happy for 51 years of marital bliss and fixing trails with the Over-the-Hill Gang. Greg Raskin happy that Dan Beyer’s’ son was engaged but unhappy the ring didn’t come from his one convenient location. Tony Shaw happy for new trails in the Prescott National Forest. Josh Walker happy that he soon would be leaving for Utah. John Stewart happy for a new hip but unhappy he had an umpiring job that evening that would make him miss the Diamondback playoff game. Sharon Harrington won the pot.

Our Speaker: Fred Vail of the Sharlot Hall Museum educated club members about the origin and early history of baseball.  He said two schools of thought exist on how baseball started in about 1845.  One says that former Gen Abner Doubleday originated it and another says Americans adopted it from the British game Rounder.  He believes the latter.
The first formal baseball team was the New York Knickerbockers who also wrote the first rule book.  Professional teams and leagues emerged with the National League in 1879.  The American League emerged in 1900, and the First World Series took place in Washington in 1903.
From the inception of the game until 1910 constituted the dead ball era, because the core of the early balls was rubber, and they weren’t as lively.  They used one ball for the entire game barring its complete deterioration.  From 1910 on, balls had cork centers and more tightly wound yarn.
Some early games erupted in fisticuffs, which may be one reason the legendary Wild Bill Hickok umpired games in Kansas.
Double Down Committee
Your Double Down Casino Night Committee has been working hard. As mentioned earlier the date is set for May 12th at the Rodeo Grounds. As Billie Orr said "it is a bright, cheery, clean and painted venue". Members are negotiating pricing on food and more of it. A new distribution of proceeds was discussed and passed by the group. Sunup will receive an additional 10% of proceeds prior to distribution based on revenues generated by each club. One thing members can be thinking about are sponsors and who you know. The committee will release sponsorship amounts and signup sheets in the near future. Stay tuned.
Flags: Changes Coming
The Boy Scouts will be posting Flags for Patriots prior to Veterans Day and that will finish up this years project. Invoices will go out for 2018 in November. We are currently looking at a change in donation amount to make the project more attractive to more people. More to follow.

Recently we observed a Facebook message that the Lions Club in Prescott is also initiating a flag project. I guess that confirms the idea that this can be a successful project if the membership gets behind it.

Howdy Fellow Sunupians/Rotarians!

Great time at last weeks meeting.  Learned more about early baseball history than I ever knew. I hope that y'all enjoyed it as much as I did.

On another note, Don  Schiller sent us a heads up on 38 proposed resolutions that will be presented to the Rotary Resolutions Council for their consideration. Don is our District representative to this council. I would strongly encourage you all to review these resolutions and send any comments to Don to bring to the council.

Saturday was a milestone for me and some other members.  It was the Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) program conducted at Prescott College (Hell of a commute!) this time.  Sunnup members Jerry Fohrman (First time), Todd Clancy (Second time) and I attended, as did Stephen Bracety (PE) and Lori Dekker who are from the Frontier Club and Leah Graham (Pres., First time?) of the Chino Valley  Club.   Stephen, Lori and I all graduated at a lunchtime ceremony (Yay! Another pin! ), although go figure, they expected us to return to finish out the day........and Yes, we all did so!

Ours was Session III and it ties together all the other sessions and projects ahead with how can we all benefit.  I now have a better idea of the various elements of Rotary and how they fit together.  I also have some new initiatives that I will be soon bringing to our table with a view to ensuring our clubs longevity.  Watch for it!

Also keep an eye out for soon to come new links on our website to: Rotary Fellowships, and Rotarian Action groups. These are ideal ways for Rotarians new and current to have an interest-based involvement it Rotary.

And what is the essence of Rotary?    According the recent Rotary I documents: Rotary unites leaders from all continents, cultures, and occupations to exchange ideas and take action for communities around the world.

As always, I look forward to seeing y'all next meeting!

Peace friends
