Good Day Folks,

I hope that it has been a great week for you since our last newsletter and meeting. Keep on sharing that great Rotary Smile.

You may be interested to know that we have begun to add the other area club presidents, our Assistant District Governor (ADG), as well as our past speakers to our "Friends" list so that they can begin to receive our newsletter. This is part of my effort to extend our outreach and create a greater awareness about Rotary and our club in the community. So with this issue I am proud to welcome those Friends who have just joined us. I look forward to a continued good relationship with all our friends and to working with my fellow presidents and our ADG.
If you have contacts who would like to receive our newsletter, particularly potential new members ask their permission and Bud or I can add them to our list of friends.

You will want to check the next issue of Prescott Living magazine as you may notice an article that I wrote about Rotary and it's involvement in nurturing both future and current community leaders through both membership experiences and training programs such as our Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA). I  hope that you like it. Note the accompanying pictures!  And guess what? After speaking with our club, Elaine Earl is in the process of joining our club as a corporate member! Welcome Elaine and Susan Cohen who will also be a  part of that membership.

We had a very good Board of Directors meeting last Thursday and you can watch for the minutes soon.

I will leave you with this thought as I feel it speaks to the type of people who become Rotary members and of the organization quite well:

Ideals are like stars: You will not succeed in touching them with your hands. But like the seafaring people on the desert of waters, you choose them as your guides, and following them you will reach your destiny.
Carl Schurz, (1829 - 1906)

OH!, And don't try to read this by the light of the "Diamond Ring" effect today. I hear it will make you crazier than usual!

Enjoy your day
A.J.

The Meeting 8/16
Sergeant-at Arms:  Jane Anne Shimizu and Todd Clancy made big bucks from happy bucks and the fines included Bud calling, texting and emailing JA while she was on vacation, Everyone was fined for AJ moving the tables back so JA can see.  Thank you AJ!!!Greg Raskin was fined for not sucking up and for having a better advertisement at the Cowboy Poet gathering than Rotary, and Bob Betz had his hot water under control today.
Our Speaker was  Denise Murphy:
Yavapai County was granted a 3 year $450,000 early literacy initiative.  Arizona Reads Now is a movement across Arizona to Talk, connect, Read!  How?  When?  When your child starts a conversation, give him or her your full attention…eye contact is a powerful connector.  After answering your child’s question, ask him or her a question.

Pause after speaking…to give your child a chance to continue the conversation.  Build vocabulary by introducing a new word and offering its definition or use it in a way that is easy to understand.  Don’t turn on the radio..or a video..talk!  Talk about the scenery, the neighborhood, or what something looks lik.  Read aloud to your chid..even older children benefit from being read to.
When reading aloud, stop and talk about the story.

Look at the pictures, ask questions about the story, ask how the story makes your child feel or what he or she likes most about the story.  Take advantage of daily activities…while in the kitchen, discuss the color, texture and taste of the foods; talk about where the foods come from, what foods you like or dislike, and who will clean up.

Flags to be Posted
Boy Scouts from Prescott will be posting Flags for Patriots beginning September 2nd to commemorate Labor Day as well as 9/11. It is your chance to donate to the Sunup Rotary Foundation, US Vets as well a contribution to the Boy Scouts if you have not already done so. $49 means you will have an American flag posted in your front yard for 6 national holidays over the course of a year. If you already have a flag you can still contribute by designating the flag for a veteran. Several of our members have already done that. If you don't know a veteran we will find one to honor for you. Thanks to all who have supported this great program. You may download a signup form from the Download section at the bottom of this newsletter. Thank you!
