Meeting Highlights March 7th

Meeting Highlights:

Neal McEwen recognized Barbara Oemke for completing her Rotary assignments with her 4 Way Test Rotary plaque made from the finest ‘pho walnut, hermetically sealed and made at Raskins Jewelers.  Barbara reported on the highlights of her Mexico trip.
Dennis Light and Tony Shaw were scolded for their carelessness in take down last week.  Anyone who did not have a gold ring around their badge didn’t have to pay a buck, Greg was fined for going to Vegas, IOU’s were paid.  Everyone was happy.

The Boy Scouts of Troop 6 in Prescott put our flags up last year and we donated $300 to their troop.
They were all leaders or past leaders and they thought putting our flags up was a fun project.

Speaker Tom Cosgrove:  The Bagdad Freeport - McMoran copper mine dominates both the landscape and the town’s collective psyche. Its fate determines whether the town is doing well or poorly. This is the quintessential company town — one where the company owns all the houses and businesses — and it exists expressly to serve the mine. Bagdad has a population of 2600 and a workforce of 900 or more.    Bagdad has its own schools and a gas station.  The mine is 1 ½ miles across, 700 feet deep and has been in operation since 1945.  They mine 8000 tons per day for their copper concentrator, 200 million lbs. of copper annually.  It is the oldest continually running plant with a fleet of up to 30-ton haul trucks with 5 shovels they can move 275,00 tons per day.    Tom said the Bagdad mine is driven by safety.  They mine in benches and blast daily using advanced laser prism control which makes for precise mining.  The tailings of copper are sand.
The mill or concentrator is where magic happens.  They disseminate the copper in flotation ponds with making slurry and pour into tailings of sand.  They put manure on the tailings to stabilize the pit and leach pads.

Howdy Sunupians!

So, as St. Patty's Day approaches here's an Irish blessing for you and some Irish thought!

"May the road rise to meet you.
May the wind be always at  your back.
May the sun shine warm on your face, the rains fall soft upon your fields and, until we meet again,
may God hold you in the palm of his hand."

Also, do you understand the joys of being Irish?  For instance, being able to spot the wanna-be Irish on St. Patrick's day. Or Admitting that we don't do so good with food. But no one understands beverages better!
Or, Tea, milk and sugar!

Other To The Point Blessings, like:
"May those who love us, love us;
and those who don't love us may God turn their hearts.
And if he doesn't turn their hearts may he turn their ankles so we will know them by their limps."

On a Rotary note, don't forget to honor Rotary Women's Week! Send greetings and thanks to all Rotary  Women and work to bring in a few more!

See you  Wednesday!
