Sunupians Restock Yavapai College Food Pantry
Deborah Chambers, Richard Hernandez, Jaydyn Ferris and Pres. Laura Vanderberg
i
Special guests at our quarterly Wednesday evening social meeting were Deborah Chambers, the Coordinator of the Yavapai College Food Pantry, and student Jadyn Ferris.  Deborah informed us about how food insecurity affects a surprisingly high number of the students enrolled at Yavapai College, and how dependent many of them are on the YC Food Pantry to augment their other food sources.  She told us that our Rotary club's quarterly project of helping them to restock the shelves of the Food Pantry is extremely important to keeping many of them in school.

Jadyn Ferris, a student beneficiary of the Food Pantry, shared with us her personal story. She told us about how being able to obtain from this on-campus food source the nutrition she needs to function as a student has enabled her to stay in school, and to be able to proudly maintain her 4.0 grade point average in her courses.  Both Deborah and Jadyn expressed their sincere gratitude to our club for our the making the meeting of these students' food and nutrition needs one of our club's community service projects.

Rotary's Global Polio Eradication Initiative

Geotracking ensures fewer children are left behind

Since 1985, eradicating Polio from the face of the earth has become a part of Rotary’s DNA. “Whatever it takes” to get the job done has become our priority agenda.  That requires massive national immunization days in many countries, along with special efforts any time an outbreak may occur.

When polio vaccinators fanned out across areas of the Republic of Congo last year to stop an outbreak, they carried a powerful new tool in their pockets: cellphones that tracked their progress as they went door to door. Equipped with a mobile app, the phones sent data back to a command center where staff could see on a digital map if homes were missed and redirect teams on the ground.

With support from the World Health Organization and other partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, the country is helping pioneer the use of what is known as geospatial tracking to stop polio outbreaks. Instead of relying on hand-drawn maps that are prone to errors, response team leaders can see with pinpoint accuracy where vaccinators have been and which homes they didn’t get to. This happens in real time when a wireless connection is available. Such speed and precision are crucial to ensuring that a vaccine reaches each child and outbreaks are stopped.

CLUB SERVICE
Our quarterly evening social meeting gave us the opportunity to meet new member Col. Russ Davis' wife Michelle.

Since Past District Governor Don Schiller transitioned from being an Active Member to an Honorary Member, we don't get to see him as often at our meetings.  It was good to have both him and his wife Annette back with us at this meeting.  They brought with them, as their guest, Joe Brown, the CEO of Touchmark Retirement Community, where they live.

STELLA ORTIZ, our Club Secretary and International Service Director, would like to thank our club members for your cards, thought and prayers on her behalf, as she has been sidelined with a succession of discouraging health issues.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

Our club members' generosity in supporting the Yavapai College Food Pantry is apparent in this picture of some of those contributions brought to Wednesday night's meeting.  YC Food Pantry Coordinator Deborah Chambers and student Jadyn Ferris are pictured here with the food.  Project Chair Richard Hernandez explained that, in addition to the food seen here, three vehicles outside the hotel were transporting the rest of the nonperishable food our members have donated to the project this quarter,

OPENING DAY FOR 2024 ITTLE LEAGUE

Our Rotary Snack Shack home plate view of the Little League Opening Day Ceremonies

Eric Chester Reports that our Gross Sales on Saturday totaled $485 — plus collecting $40 in tips for Little League equipment.  Thanks to those who helped man our Rotary Snack Shack on Opening Day! Among them were:

Todd Clancy loading up the chili to heap on the chili dogs.

Jane Anne snagging a dog to fill an Opening Day Special order.

Marsha Teller and Jane Ann Shimizu happily greeting the kids and their families at our Rotary Snack Shack window.

IT'S FUN!  Have you signed up yet to help man the shack this season?  Sign up here:

John Stewart is asking you to mark your calendars for Saturday, May 18, 8:00 a.m., for the next All-Vets Memorial Cleanup on the Courthouse Square.

A conceited new rookie was pitching his first game.

He walked the first five men he faced and the manager took him out of the game.

The rookie slammed his glove on the ground as he yelled, "That jerk took me out when I had a no-hitter going!"

The chances of an open-faced jelly sandwich landing face down on the carpet/rug are directly correlated to the newness and cost of that carpet/rug.

A couple phoned a neighbor to extend birthday greetings. They dialed the number and then sang "Happy Birthday" to him. But when they finished their off-key rendition, they discovered that they had dialed the wrong number.

"Don't let it bother you," said a strange but amused voice. "You folks need all the practice you can get."

What do you call a fat psychic? A four-chin teller.

When a new child visited our Sunday school, the teacher greeted him and asked his age. The little boy held up four fingers.

"Oh, you're four," said the teacher. "And when will you be 5?"

The child stared at her and after a few seconds replied, "When I hold up the other finger."

I might wake up and go running. I also may wake up and win the lottery. The odds are about the same.
