WAPI Making
Thank you to Dr. Laura Vanderberg who led a hands on demonstration of WAPI making. WAPI's are Water Purification Indicators to be taken to Kenya team by our Interact Ambassadors to Kenya next summer. This is a project many of our Interact clubs adopt and Laura thought it would be fun our club to experience WAPI making also. Thank you to everyone who helped set up and create WAPI's.
The reusable WAPI (Water Pasteurization Indicator) is a simple, low cost device containing a special soy wax that helps users determine when water has reached pasteurization temperatures. The wax melts at the same temperature as the water is pasteurized.
Disease-causing organisms in water and milk are killed by exposure to heat in a process know as pasteurization. Boiling is often recommended to achieve pasteurization. However, contaminated water and milk can be pasteurized at temperatures well below boiling, saving time and fuel.
Water heated to 149 degrees F (65 degrees C) for a short period of time is free from microbes, including E Coli, Rotaviruses, Giardia and Hepatitis A virus. At 160 degrees F (71 degrees C) milk and foods are pasteurized.
The WAPI can be used successfully over most fuel sources including wood, charcoal and gas. It also works especially well in conjunction with the solar cooker. With good sun, simple solar cookers can pasteurize water for a family at a rate of about one liter of water per hour.

100 Year of Rotary
Celebrate 100 years of Rotary in Prescott on October 1 and 2 this year!
It’s a 1920s theme evening, black tie optional. We will start with happy hour and dance lessons. We’ll follow that with a special 4-course gala dinner, specially designed by the Hassayampa Inn chef. There will be dancing, a silent auction, a historical perspective of Rotary and we are even going to auction off a piece of Prescott history.
October 1: Community Sing – 5pm on the courthouse steps
This is our actual charter date, so the club is officially 100 years old on Friday. We’ll gather at the courthouse, and because we are a club of song, we’ll host a community sing-along with special guests.

President's Message
Richard Hernandez
What a great time we had Wednesday making WAPIs! If you weren’t able to make last week's meeting you missed out. Thank you Laura, AJ, and Art for making it happen.
I have been having general conversations with the Presidents from Frontier and Prescott, Danny and Candice, about doing more together. We believe it will help all our clubs have a larger presence at community events and help get “Rotary” more visibility. Stay tuned for more on this down the road.
This week's meeting (15th) is allocated to a visit from our District Governor, Bret McKeand. I am asking that our membership turn out in force. I would love to showcase to our leadership the commitment of Sunup Members by packing the house! Bret will be presenting the official Rotary theme banner to our club as well as recognizing one of our own as Community Service Champion.
Help Spread Sunshine: If you currently know any Rotary members who are going through challenging times or if you'd like to volunteer to make calls and send cards to members and their families during sickness, hospitalization or loss, contact Donna Jacobs, Club Service Director to learn more: thejacobs789@gmail.com
