Last Meeting Highlights
Clent Walker presided and Linda Mast gave the prayer, Teresa Smith led us in the pledge, and Katheryn Tuberty led us in the 4 Way Test.

Thought of the day from Sharon Harrington : Accept what is, let go of what was, and have faith in what will be.

Clent announced Rotary International will refund $10 per member back to each club for the month of August, due to no in person meetings or conferences. Jane Anne needs donations for our online auction as soon as possible to get it going.

Sgt. Jane Anne fined Clent for stealing her thunder and the advertising on his shirt. She fined herself for her shirt advertising, Greg Raskin for putting ads on her facebook page, and levied fines on everyone who hadn’t read the Rotary magazine. Lots of happy bucks.

Our speaker was Becca Mohally Renk. Originally from northern Idaho, Becca has lived in Nicaragua for 20 years and is a founding member and past president of the Rotary Club of Ciudad Sandino, charted in 2013. She is married to an Irishman from Cork City and has 2 teenage daughters. Her day job is with The Center for Economic Development in Central America.

All members of the Rotary club live and work in Ciudad Sandino, one of Nicaraguas’ poorest areas, with 180 thousand residents, just outside Managua. The 12 member club has been recognized 4 years in a row at the Rotary District level. They are helping local residents move from pandemic to progress, currently working to prevent the spread of Covid 19. Nicaragua began preparing for the virus in January and never had a lock down, with hospitals operating at normal capacity. Nicaragua has free universal healthcare. Workers have made 4.5 million home visits and quarantined those testing positive. Foreigners must test negative to enter the country. Residents cannot practice social distancing due to over crowded conditions and have learned to live with the virus. The army works at night, disinfecting public areas. Handwashing stations are abundant and residents are encouraged to wear masks in public.

Support from the Rotary clubs of Santa Barbara, Sunrise and West Sacramento enabled Sandino Rotary to equip healthcare workers with supplies to battle Covid 19. The club furnished 30 hand washing stations in public areas and furnished cleaning supplies to 17 centers for low income families, enabling the centers to keep functioning during the current crises. Sandino Rotarys’ past projects include a Peace Alternative to Violence Workshop, installation of safe playground equipment in 2 schools, a Global Grant to provide educational support and daily nutrition to 200 students and a $151,000 Global Grant to supply potable water to 13,000 people. 38,000 man hours were expended with 13 miles of pipe installed. A $250,000 Global Grant to provide a sewage disposal system to eliminate open sewage and provide sanitary latrines and a Aquaponic system to raise fish and grow vegetables at family homes benefiting 200 people at $693 per system are in the future.

Other Rotary clubs can help meet community needs by donating old cell phones, reading glasses and used tires to be used to make playground equipment.

Greeting fellow Sunupians,

I wanted to say thank you to all those who were able to attend the Installation Dinner this past Wednesday evening. It was a great turnout and it was very nice to see as many members in person again. I also want to say thank you to Jerry Fohrman on the great job you did for the club, and congratulations on a successful rotary year. I’m looking forward to a fun and prosperous year as we continue to plot a course through the unknown waters of this pandemic.

Thanks, Sunupians for all you do, and I hope to see you all this Wednesday. Remember to invite a friend.
