Speaker Last Week: Kevin Rother, Police Services coordinator for the Prescott Police Department, discussed the timely topic of frauds and scams occurring in the Prescott area. Before moving to Prescott in 2013, he was Police Sergeant for the City of Glendale for 26 years. Most recent scams involve spoofing on phone calls or phishing emails to obtain personal information or convince the person called to send money to the scammer. The best defense against these unwanted phone calls is not to answer any unknown caller. Never provide personal information or agree to send payment based on a phone solicitation. Kevin reminded us that legitimate authorities never solicit payment or request legal action over the phone but rather deliver or send written notice. Computer scams are usually initiated by opening unsolicited emails which can allow the sender to infect the computer and generate another offer to fix the problem and ultimately gain access to all your stored personal data. Your best defense is to never open unsolicited emails, as viruses are always suspected.

Howdy My Fellow Rotarians and Friends,
academy is geared towards various community leaders to help us This past weekend, thanks to the efforts of the leadership and staff of the Central Arizona Fire and Medical Authority (CAFMA) and the Prescott Fire Department (PFD), myself, Sarah Tomsky and Susan Cohen participated in Fire Ops 101. This hands-on citizens' better understand what our first responders go through both in preparation and on the job.
Their commitment to their chosen profession, their personal approach to all that they do, and their overall professionalism is admirable, and celebrated by our communities. It was a wonderful program, and we recommend it to any and all community members, even if just to observe.
Besides instruction on how fires start, their speed and intensity based on the materials involved, we were fitted with our own protective 'bunker' gear, exactly what our fire fighters wear, including air tanks. We were placed in teams of three or four people and participated in four scenarios: Emergency Medical Services response to a heart attack; a car fire; extrication of a victim from a wrecked car; and extrication of a victim from a smoke-filled room (which was safe, non-toxic theatrical smoke).
A great, eye opening program that taught us much about CAFMA and PFD. I am grateful to Rotary, Chief Scott Freitag of CAFMA, and Chief Dennis Light of PFD for the opportunity to have had this experience.
