President Clent Walker presided and guided us in prayer, Linda Mast led us with the pledge to our flag, Dan Beyer with the Four Way Test, and Art Harrington led us in our song. Congratulations to Jane Anne for taking the pot.
Greg Raskin introduced his guest and prospective new member Bill Mosher, and Linda Mast introduced her husband Bard, who has already submitted an application to our club. Welcome Bill and Bard!
Thought of the Day by Richard: “Whether you think you can, or think you can’t – you’re right” Henry Ford.
Bud Ackerman reminded us that next week’s meeting will be a very special Veterans Day celebration. Todd Clancy encouraged members to participate in the Veterans Day Parade on Nov. 11. The staging area for our ‘Rotary float’ will be on N. Marina St, north of Gurley St. in downtown Prescott and the parade begins at 11 AM. Jane Anne reminded our members that they could do their Christmas shopping on our charity auction website https://www. charityauctionstoday.com/ auctions/sunuprotary-online- scholarship-auction-15979
Dan Beyer was the Sergeant at Arms once again and immediately fined all those who stayed up past 10 PM to watch the presidential election results. Todd Clancy paid for taking the Sunup banner and not telling anyone and he thanked Linda Mast and new member Laura Vanderberg for bringing their husbands and participating in the Findlay Trunk-or-Treat event. Linda also paid up because her husband attempted to recruit our club president Clent at the Findlay Halloween event. Katheryn Tuberty thanked Jane Anne, Donna, and Laura for all their time putting together the gift baskets. Art had some unhappy bucks as PETS was forced to go virtual. Finally, in a first-of-a-kind fine, our guest speaker Carmen Frederic fined a club member (AJ) for losing her biography.
AJ Sheridan introduced our guest speaker, Executive Director of Prescott Area Shelter and Services (PASS) Carmen Frederic. Carmen was the original Executive Director of PASS when it was known as Prescott Area Women's Shelter, the Executive Director from 2009 to 2015 and rejoined the team in 2017. She was originally scheduled to be our guest speaker a few weeks ago, but due to a positive Covid result from one of the residents at the shelter, she had to quarantine along with all shelter residents and staff for two weeks.
The primary goal of PASS is to alleviate Yavapai County's growing need for an emergency shelter for homeless women and children. Homeless women and children are the most vulnerable in our community. PASS helps homeless women to gain the skills, resources and support to transition out of homelessness during their 90 days at the shelter. This happens through consistent case management, support programs, our volunteers and much more.
The Shelter provides the following services year-round: food, shelter, clothing, resources, and case management. Above all, they strive to ensure that every woman and child at the shelter feels safe and supported. Carmen provided our club with an up-close-and-personal view into what life is like for those women and families living in the shelter. It was a fascinating insight into how single women and families learn how to live with each other as they are each struggling with their individual life challenges.
Sunup Rotary has maintained a very close relationship with PASS for several years. Our club is responsible for providing a hot, ready-to-eat dinner for the shelter residents on a regularly scheduled date once a month; however, our club members usually volunteer for additional meals to cover open dates for the shelter. In addition to providing meals, Sunup has assisted PASS in a variety of means, such as sanding/painting their outside picnic tables, furnishing their new building additions, delivering over 1000 medical-grade protective masks, and even providing mini-shelters for their beloved pet cats.
Anyone who is interested in providing a meal to PASS can contact Todd Clancy at taclancy2000@yahoo.com or 480-2857719. You can either sign up for our regularly scheduled meal delivery on the first Monday of each month, or take one of the many open dates. Our club sends out an email to all members with a PASS update and list of open dates around the 25th of each month.
