“Cycling without Age”

What's Happening

Thank you Guest Paul Aslanian

Written by Laura Vanderberg.

(A.J. Sheridan on left, Paul Aslanian on Right)

Our speaker this week was Paul Aslanian, from Bloomtree Realty.

Paul is a lifelong student of economics.  He shared both nationwide and Prescott perspectives about housing.

Today, Prescott is on average for homesales in 2018. COVID Housing boom happened, so now seems much slower.

Sales are down, but inventory is even lower.  Home equity is near an all time high.

The average equity of a borrower is $180,000 nationwide.  Huge security for homeowners!

Congrats Rotarian Art Harrington on 60 years of service!

Returning to my Rotary roots in Winslow, AZ, where I began my Rotary International Adventure in service 60 years ago, it was a thrill and an honor to have the privilege of addressing the members of this still-thriving Rotary Club on the club's 100th Anniversary this week.

It was also an enormous honor to have my longtime best friend Greg Podd, current Trustee of The Rotary Foundation, and former Rotary International Vice President, also make the trip to Winslow to serve as the keynote speaker that evening.

Since Greg and his wife Pam, along with my wife Sharon and I, have been such close friends, sharing so many Rotary and personal moments together over the years, we are indebted to them for taking the time in their extremely-busy schedule to be with us to share this very special occasion.

I have attached a copy of the framed certificate which Jessica Cox-Atha, the current Club President of Winslow Rotary, presented to me, recognizing my 60 years of Rotary service, stretching from the time I became a member of the Winslow Rotary Club.

Also attached is a photo of the Rotary art car, which was created to commemorate the Winslow Rotary Club's 100 years of service to that community.

It was unveiled in a separate ceremony at noon on Wednesday, where it will be a prominent permanent fixture in front of the Winslow Chamber of Commerce.

RYLA

Written by Laura Vanderberg. Edited by Lisa DeLeo.

A.J. Sheridan shared that we had a successful RYLA this last weekend. with 81 attendees.  The kids had a great experience.

He shared their RYLA Pinerock 2023 video and they each shared their favorite part of RYLA.

All of them talked about the blindfolded hike- imagine hiking up a mountain that feels like a cliff- blindfolded!

They all also were enthusiastic about the friendships and bonding that happened over RYLA weekend.

Our club sponsored three students from Chino Valley and Prescott High School.

Re-opening of The Snack Shack

Written by Laura Vanderberg

Tim Wiederaenders reported out to the club about the Snack Shack and how we can re-engage.  The city owns the shack, but we need to have a Health Department inspect it, and we will have to have safe food handling training.

Christy Manning has the keys.   Time is of the essence because Little League and YC Softball season start soon.

Everyone wants to re-engage.  There was a concern about not having enough volunteers.

Christy will talk with the other clubs, Interact and Rotaract clubs to see if they’ll also be a part of this effort.  Let’s play ball!

“Good friends are like stars, you don’t always see them, but you always know they’re there.”

I just love this quote from Christy Evans; and I might have even given a magnet or card with this quote to one of my besties.

I think it’s a pretty accuratereflection of the state of close friendships as we age.

Busy as we all may be, it’s still important to maintain and/or grow friendships.

Why? Because it’s good for our health- really!

Science tells us that friendships positively impact our health across the board, from increasing our life satisfaction, to decreasing the likelihood of chronic disease (Fuller, 2017).

Friendship has even been shown to improve your mind (Cook Maher et al., 2017)!

It's a good thing we have Rotary!

Last week at RLI, it was apparent that there were some new and lifelong friends connecting at the meeting.

Many of the participants talked about the friendships they’ve established and maintained over the years.

This week we had some high school RYLA participants at our morning meeting, and they talked about the friendships that were built over just one weekend.

When I moved here 2-1/2 years ago, I knew I wanted to join a local Rotary Club, not just because of all of the wonderful service that we do, but also for the opportunity to get to know a group of like-minded people.

And now, I feel like I have a whole bunch of friends that I get to see on a regular basis- it’s great!!!!

So how long has it been since you got together with a friend (besides in our Club)?

When we’re younger, we develop friendships more easily, in part because we tend to be collocated (as in college) and as couples havechildren, friendships form between parents with young kids of similar age.

Then, as we get older, we tend to get wrapped up in work, family, maybe fitness or other hobbies, and we don’t spend much, if any, time with friends.

We try to squeeze them in between all of our other commitments and it often takes weeks to schedule something as simple as a cup of coffee.

Sound familiar?

What can you do about this?

Well, what if you made time for friends?

What if you made it a priority?

What if you picked up your phone and called or texted a pal to catch up?

To get together sooner rather than later?

I guarantee that your friend will be tickled to hear from you, no matter how long it’s been.

Here's to friends! Here's to you!

Make it a great week!

Warm Regards,

Laura
