Thank you to this week's presenter: Brad Clifford, Athletic Director of Yavapai College
Quoted from Yavapai College Staff Directory "Having spent 36 years at Yavapai College as a student, student-athlete, assistant coach, head coach, assistant athletic director and athletic director, Brad Clifford bleeds Roughrider Green and Gold.
Clifford is no stranger to the Prescott area; he attended Prescott High School where he lettered in basketball twice and baseball twice. Following a two-year LDS mission to Quito, Ecuador, Clifford returned to Prescott and became a student at Yavapai College. Yavapai was reinstating the men’s basketball program after a five-year hiatus and Clifford became a member of that team. A back injury forced Clifford to cut his competitive days short but he found his calling when the women’s basketball coach asked him to become his assistant. Clifford served for seven years as the women’s assistant coach and the men’s assistant coach before taking the position of head women’s basketball coach in 1996. During his 15-year tenure at the helm of the Roughriders, Clifford had an overall record of 323 -143, becoming the all-time winningest basketball coach in YC history. Twice Clifford was named the WBCA Region I Coach of the Year.
Clifford coached six NJCAA All-Americans, 11 WBCA Kodak All-Americans, three ACCAC freshmen of the year, 58 All-ACCAC players and three ACCAC Players of the Year. Following his coaching term, Clifford was named the assistant athletic director, a position that he held for a short five months, before being named the Athletic Director in 2012." Jerry Hulm shared that: "Brad Clifford's presentation emphasized the character building aspects of playing sports and the importance of sports programs at Yavapai College. He also emphasized the academic performance of the athletes at the college, something they are very proud of as well as the new things they will be adding to their program in the new year." Brad Clifford said: "Athletics are an important part of the co-curricular leaning activities, according to the Higher Learning Commission, where learning happens inside and outside the classroom. Yavapai College athletes excel in the classroom producing Academic All-Americans and Academic All-American Teams. The Roughrider teams have logged over 1,000 hours of community service each year for Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Special Olympics, Breast Cancer Awareness, US Vets, Reading in the schools, MATFORCE, Yavapai Indian Tribe Youth, etc. Because very few student-athletes receive a “full ride”, the out-of-county student-athletes pay a percentage of their schooling and are a direct positive economic impact to the city."
Interact District ConferenceWritten by Art Harrington Art Harrington reported that The Interact District Conference was held Saturday, Feb. 26th. We have 189 registered to attend this conference, which is being hosted by the Interact Club of Centennial High School in Peoria. Looking forward to hearing updates from Art Harrington. As the District Interact Chair, Art shared that our amazing PHS Interact Club will come away as the most award-winning club in our Interact District this year. They have really "knocked the ball out of the park" with their accomplishments.
Interact Ambassadors to KenyaWritten byArt Harrington Art Harrington shared that six Interact Ambassadors to Kenya, who will be representing our district in that country this summer in July, will be revealed at this Interact District Conference. While those team member identities are kept as a closely-guarded secret until they are each introduced at the conference, I let the club know that our PHS Interact Club will be well-represented on that team. Two of the 6 students who have been selected are from our PHS Interact Club, and Cathleen Cherry, our PHS Interact Faculty Advisor, will be traveling as one of the adult Advisors to that team. |
