Thank you Veterans Day Speakers Doug Carroll (AFROTC) & John Berry.

Written by Jane Anne Shimizu

Jon Berry put together a wonderful program, with presentation of colors by AFROTC Detachment 28 and Colonel Doug Carrol

John Berry gave the history of Veterans Day, a holiday dedicated to American Veterans of all wars. In 1918, on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, was declared between the Allied nations and Germany in World War I, then known as “The Great War.” Commemorated in many countries as Armistice Day the following year, November 11th became a federal holiday in the United States in 1938. In the aftermath of World War II and the Korean War, Armistice Day became known as Veterans Day.

The speaker was Colonel Douglas T. Carroll, the Commander and Professor of Aerospace Studies for Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFROTC) Detachment 028, at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Prescott, AZ.

He is a 1993 graduate of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Prescott, AZ where he received his commission as an AFROTC Distinguished Graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science.  He has served in numerous operational, staff, and command assignments including Commander, 353d Special Operations Support Squadron, Kadena AB, Japan; 353d Expeditionary Special Operations Group, Philippines; and Vice Commander, 58th Special Operations Wing, Albuquerque, NM.  Col Carroll is a 2013 graduate of the US Naval War College where he earned a Master of Arts Degree in National Security and Strategic Studies.

Col Carroll has deployed in support of Operations JOINT GUARD, JOINT ENDEAVOR, ALLIED FORCE, ENDURING FREEDOM, IRAQI FREEDOM, TOMODACHI, and ENDURING FREEDOM-Philippines, as well as the execution of numerous counterdrug missions for PLAN COLOMBIA.

Prior to his current position, Colonel Carroll was the Director of Strategy, Plans, & Policy at Special Operations Command Europe, Stuttgart, Germany, where he was responsible for translating national theater guidance into operational-level strategy and plans to achieve theater and campaign objectives, as well as programming and coordinating the execution of $152 million of special operations and conventional force funding annually.

We also enjoyed a presentation of colors by AFROTC Detachment 28.

Hello Sunupians,

What a truly amazing meeting we had Wednesday. Our Rotarians did an awesome job coordinating a respectful tribute to our veterans.

The ERAU color presentation was moving and appreciated. To have Veteran guests was the icing on the cake.

If you missed the meeting, you missed out!  I’m still bragging on it.
