All of the happy bucks were given for the great job the City of Prescott and Yavapai County did cleaning the streets and helping all the citizens stay safe. I have to be honest and tell all that I didn’t take notes of the SGT. Because Greg does such a great job I was participating instead of writing and taking notes.
Last Weeks Speaker: Our own Jerry Fohrman gave us quite the entertaining history lesson. He introduced us to a book called Sharps & Flats from 1894. Professional card cheating is a serious, and lucrative, business. Most people are completely unaware of the fact that professional card cheaters are part of an entire subculture that coexists as a "parallel universe" right alongside of the world that the "squares" (or as Maskelyne calls them "flats") live in.
He began with the notorious gamblers Doc Holiday, an Americangambler, gunfighter, and dentist, and a good friend of Wyatt Earp. Wyatt Earp was an American Old West lawman and gambler in Cochise County, Arizona Territory. Bartholomew William Barclay "Bat" Masterson (November 26, 1853 – October 25, 1921) was a U.S. Army scout, lawman, professional gambler, and journalist known for his exploits in the 19th-century American Old West. Bat Masterson worked for “Big Ed” Chase dealing faro at the Arcade Gambling House in Denver, Colorado.
And don’t forget the ladies. Eleanore Dumont, better known as Madame Mustache, was one of the first known professional blackjack players in American history and, for over three decades, made her name famous across the mining camps of the American West. Poker Alice (1851-1930) – Perhaps the best known female poker player in the Old West. Charlotte Thompson was dealing up and down the Mississppi during the civil war. She was a 7’ tall black woman. The gist of Jerry’s presentation was how crooked the casino’s as well as the dealers were during the old west. His theme was “Booze and the blowens cop the lot and wine and women will take it all.”
We have a special program coming on March 20th that features Todd Weber. Todd brings history to life through dynamic presentations and informative guided tours. He will be speaking on "Explorers of the Colorado River before Powell." He is a dynamic speaker and we have asked that you bring a guest. Please let Stan Steiner know if you haven't already signed up to do so. We expect a full house with all those expected. As a member of Sunup, don't miss this treat!

Good morning Sun-upians …. Courtesy of the recent snowfall, our board meeting was postponed for a week … so I guess that the board and its members are fresh on my mind as I pen this week’s missive. Mostly, I reflect on how truly blessed and grateful I am to be surrounded by such talent, energy, and experience in these fellow Sun-upians who have taken the time out of their workdays to make this club the viable organization that it is. Beyond this, I am humbled by the example of the many members who have taken the lead or are participating in Sun-up’s projects. Thank you. Through the efforts of many hands we are achieving great results in this community.
