Last Week’s Speaker: Stan Gologoski on Modern Warfare

Goligoski is a 1992 Prescott High School graduate. The 20-year retired United States Army Major, was entrusted to serve as a company commander in Afghanistan and served in Iraq as the 101st Airborne Divisions military intelligence collection manager. He graduated from the Army’s Airborne school, enabling him to become part of the Army’s most elite rapid-deployment troops. Later he was chosen to be an aide de camp to a military command general in Afghanistan. He served the final three years of his career at West Point teaching tactical maneuvers to cadets.

“Our mission was to go out and become good neighbors; win the population over so that they no longer support the Taliban”

Stan explained some of the challenges involved in modern warfare, especially with guerilla tactics on the rise. Our military is using a Separate/Connect/Transform approach with governments and civilians. Separate: Push insurgents off balance and out of the area. Connect: build support and legitimacy of governments while eroding support for insurgents by discrediting them. Transform: communities to the point where insurgency is no longer attractive by helping to strengthen infrastructure, stability and prosperity. Then, when it comes to actual conflict; some hallmarks of modern warfare are that every soldier is trained in basic medical techniques. More lives are being saved because of this. Technology is also giving us a cutting edge in finding targets and eliminating them efficiently.
