On Saturday, Aug. 18, Chair Rod Cordes heeded some requests and scheduled a road cleanup to accommodate those who have work obligations during the week. A crew of eager workers, Greg Barstad, Gus Bergman, Eric Chester, Rod Cordes, Phil Goode, Barbara & Mike Oemcke, Terry & Terri Smith, A.J. Sheridan and Ben Tuttle showed up and were done in record time. Thanks to the above club members for helping Sunup make our community cleaner and more livable!

Great ExtractionsGus Bergman was Sarge and enlisted Jane Anne Shimizu to tote the spittoon. The road cleanup crew were asked to stand and be recognized and then those not standing were fined. Barbara Oemcke paid for VAMC article in the paper. Jerry Fohrman and John White are off to fish and hunt in Montana and paid a buck. Tony Shaw donated a Sunup logo’d shirt and auctioneer Clent Walker collected $30 from Jose Lujan for the shirt. John Stewart and others stated how much they will miss Norm Samuelson as he leaves for Washington State. Ray Carlson was the lucky pot winner.

Speaker August 22ndBarbara Oemcke spoke on the Northern Arizona VA Health Center system. She is impressed by the support the community affords the VA Center. As the Medical Center director, Barbara is responsible for the northern half of Arizona. There are clinics in Cottonwood, Kingman, Lake Havasu and Flagstaff. There are six smaller clinics with a registered nurse in other areas like the Navajo reservation. With the capital improvement funds available, they are updating the infrastructure, with the first phase a parking structure under way.  With the problem on position transitions, as people retire, they are working on retention and recruitment.
