Thank you Guest Speaker Mona Stephens "Yavapai CASA for Kids"

Written by Chelsea Sederstrom Edited by Lisa DeLeo.

Mona Stephens is the Development Director of Yavapai CASA for Kids. Yavapai CASA For Kids Foundation works to enrich the lives of current and former foster youth and support the CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) program.  It started in 2001.

On their site www.yavapaicasaforkids.org CASA says: "An average of 25 children are taken from their families and placed in foster care, each day, in Arizona.

Many of these kids arrive in care with only the clothes on their backs. They experience immense trauma as their sense of normalcy is stripped from them.

There are 400 of these kids in Yavapai County. 400 kids, at a disadvantage statistically who just need a little extra attention, care, and help."

Mona is passionate about her work because it is mission based for her. When her job gets hard, the fruits of her labor are worth more than money.

The Foster care system leaves many kids helpless, or feeling alone due to inconsistencies with case workers and unsafe homes that influence bad behaviors in the future.

She shared that kids in our country get taken away mostly because of drug use by their parents. Her biological mother had all her children taken away. Her dad took her in and raised her right. Her siblings became the statistics you hear about in foster care. Her siblings didn't get the same upbringing she did, luckily she had her Dad and Step mom.

Mona believes that if you know better, you do better. Children are our future and she is passionate about her care for children.

Programs CASA offers include: education services, tutoring, graduation, mapping out their future, job shadowing and training for job success.

Giving your time or talents make a difference to help the youth in our community.

This week, the “old” Pres, Richard, will be standing in for me.  Just so no one misses me too much- here’s a quick joke:

What washes up on very small beaches?   Microwaves!

I’m headed out on a road trip adventure back to Cody, Wyoming to visit friends that I haven’t seen in the two years since we moved to Prescott.

Not everyone likes road trips, but I think most everyone likes vacations.  For me, this is a vacation of one of the funnest (that’s a technical term!) kinds- great scenery, time with friends, quality time outdoors, and places along the way to explore!

It seems like lots of Sunupians have had some great vacations this summer- some long, some short, some to exotic places, some not so much so.

Why not ask someone about their vacation experience this week?  You might learn about a new place, or share in a memory of someplace you’ve been.

Everyone who’s gone on vacation has seemed lighter, more relaxed upon return.

That’s the beauty of vacation- time to relax and rejuvenate.  If you’ve not had a vacation in a long time, maybe consider taking one.

I hear the protests from some of you, “I have too much work”, “I can’t afford to take the time off”, that list goes on.

Taking time away from work or daily stresses has tremendous health benefits, both physical and mental (too many references to list!).  Even just a day away, outdoors, preferably without your electronic device(s), can do wonders for your soul, not to mention your outlook!

And if you simply cannot physically go away, try giving yourself some plain old downtime periodically during the day- step outside, go for a short walk, step away from the work or the stress, take a few deep breaths with your full attention on those breaths.

There’s lots of ways to bring those stress levels down.

What works for you?

When you feel that stress level climbing, what will you do?

Have a great (lower stress) week & see you all next week!

Warmest Regards,

Laura Vanderberg
