OLLI Update Enlightening

Patricia Berlowe, Director of the Prescott Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Yavapai College, gave a very energetic and enthusiastic presentation to our club about our local award-winning program and its offerings.  Normally connected only with universities across the country, the Prescott OLLI program is unique in a number of ways, beside being immensely popular.  Prescott is very fortunate to have such a wide range of courses available to adults of all ages.  To view the Prescott OLLI Summer 2023 course offerings, go to wwwyc.edu/prescottolli.  You can also register for a course on that website, or by calling (928) 717-7634.  Thanks to Patricia for a great club program!

Roadside Cleanup:  Fueled by a box of donuts and coffee, ten of our Prescott Sunup members (counting President Laura, who was taking the photo) hit the road early last Saturday morning to clean up our club's mile of Highway 89, south of Prescott.  Many hands made for light work.  The bags of trash and the tire above were gathered in just about an hour.  Thanks to all who helped with this roadside cleanup project, and to Matt Greenlee, who spearheaded it.

New Welcome Sign Coming into Prescott from the south on Highway 89, be sure to note the beautiful new Welcome to Prescott Sign.  This was a joint project, with the help of the Prescott Rotary Club and the Prescott Frontier Rotary Club.  Special thanks to our A.J. Sheridan for his work in getting the new sign hung.

Update on Jerry Fohrman:  On Saturday, Janet said, "I appreciate the love, prayers and concerns. Today we feel that Jerry has turned a good corner, finally! We are still in the Phoenix hospital talking one hour and one day at a time."  If you would like to send Jerry an encouraging note or card, his email address is jfcardman@gmail.com.  Their home address is 1199 W. Timber Ridge Road, Prescott, AZ 86303.

Outstanding Ribs and Pulled Pork!  Thanks to President Laura and her barbeque master husband Steve, for hosting a Memorial Day barbecue this weekend on Sunday for Rotarian and neighborhood friends.  The food was incredible, and the fellowship was great!

Tribute to StanWe were all saddened with the news that our longtime member and Membership Chair, Stan Steiner, passed away on Monday, May 22.  No one was more committed to Rotary and to our club than Stan.  He could always be depended on to show up for any project, and to carry out to the best of his ability every assignment he accepted.  He was a key element in helping our club to grow to the size it became,  At his bedside when he passed at Las Fuentes, where he lived the past several years, were his two daughters and his son.  Tracey Steiner, his daughter who lives in Georgia, told us that there will be a celebration of life for her father here in Prescott, probably sometime in the Fall.

Thanks to John Stewart for this photo of Stan helping with the 2019 All Vets Memorial Cleanup.  Stan is on the right side, next to Rod Cordes; with Tony Shaw to the left.. Stan was at All Vets each year since 2006. He was a US Army Veteran.

JR RYLA coming up June 14-17:  Prescott Sunup Rotary Club is heavily-invested in this new leadership training camp for middle school youth, grates 6-8, which was launched last summer.  In addition to our club providing four $300 scholarships for the delegates, Bob Keys is serving as the Registrar, Stella Ortiz as the Camp Nurse, and Jon Berry co-directing the Challenge Course.  A.J. Sheridan has been serving on the Planning Committee and staff the past three years, and Art Harington initiated the program, coordinates the planning for it, and teaches the course on ethical decision making.  If you would like to help with this great program, let Art know.

Double Down Casino Night Update

Let's sell tickets and get donations

Jane Anne suggests that when people ask for donations they lead with the amazing scholarships we gave last year- $18,000 worth, and that we want to raise $35,000 this year!

Please have donors fill out the form, and get it back to us.  Also- very important!  Jane Anne reminded everyone that you actually have to collect the donation, in whatever form!

The donation or sponsorship isn't complete without the money or item in hand!  We need 16 blackjack table sponsorships at $250 each, and three crap tables at $450 each.

Club members are being asked to bring to our Rotary meeting a nice bottle of wine, spirits or a 12-pack craft beer.  We also need baskets to use help create gift baskets for the silent auction.

Saturday, June 17th  5p-9p at the Prescott Vibes Event Center.

Located at: 6200 North Rt. 89, Prescott (near the Prescott Airport)

Contact Jane Anne Shimizu928-636-4565 Ext. 4 or jashimizu@gunsite.com

Club members will be going out to the other Prescott Rotary Clubs to share information about DD and sell tickets.

Club members will be selling hard copy tickets, and for the internet/Square- savvy amongst us, you can also buy tickets by going to our website and clicking on the Double Down logo.

OR GO TO: https://sunup-double-down.square.site/

Every club member is expected to sell 10 tickets. Get table sponsors and donations! Go now!

We need dealers for our 21 tables. Celebrity dealers and Prescott Residents encouraged.

Remember, our ability to offer scholarships is directly related to our success with Double Down.  The more donors, the more money raised, the more scholarships we're able to give to deserving graduating seniors- for both college and vocational schools.

Help us support our youth!
