"Eye-Opening" would be the best description of Jeff Newnum's message to our club last Wednesday. Having served for more than 30 years with the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office, working in all of the different roles, and now as the Chief Deputy, coordinating all of the divisions and departments, Newnum has an understanding of every aspect of YCSO law enforcement for the more than 8,000 square miles of territory they serve. It was interesting to hear him describe himself as a Romans 13 law enforcement officer. (You might want to get your Bible out and read the 13th chapter of the Book of Romans in the New Testament, in order to understand the tough position he takes.)
Particularly eye-opening was his description of the huge role the Mexican Cartels play in operating large-scale criminal activities here in Arizona; and how, with the border now secured, they have altered the way they operate here, in order to maintain the substantial amount of income they bring in every year. Among other things, they have become particularly adept at a new kind of train robbery. They hit and quickly empty box cars carrying valuable merchandise during the relatively-brief time a freight train is pulled off on a siding to let another train pass, heading the opposite direction. In addition, they continue to adapt and refine their drug running and human trafficking, in order to maintain their profits from those main aspects of their operations. We were surprised to learn that one of the Mexican Cartel bosses actually lives in Scottsdale.

We had three birthdays to celebrate at our meeting last week: Gus Bergman on June 3, Bob Keys on June 6, and A.J. Sheridan on June 7. A.J. wasn't able to make it to the meeting, so we sang for Gus and Bob, with Gus getting to wear the special birthday hat in honor of turning 88 years old that day. Happy birthday to Gus, Bob and A.J.!.
