Supervisor Harry Oberg Gives State of Yavapai County Report

Supervisor Harry Oberg reported to our club that Yavapai County is doing relatively well in managing the growth we have been experiencing and in paying down the indebtedness.   While we have experienced considerable growth, and are close to triggering a mandated re-districting, we have not quite reached that point yet.  While he believes that many of the board decisions which have been made have been valid and helpful ones, from his answers to some of the questions form club members, it was apparent that he has cast some dissenting votes on others.  As a former Prescott Mayor, Harry shared with us that he and his wife had agreed that he would serve only a single term as a County Supervisor; so he will not be running for re-election.  Thanks, Harry, for your report!  It was good to have you back with us.

 

 

 

Arturo Vargas, from the Rotary Club of Tehuacan, District 4185, Mexico, exchanged his club's banner with Past Club President Clent Walker, who was presiding at Wednesday's meeting in Laura's absence.  Arturo was visiting our club meeting, in advance of the Mexico-USA Friendship Conference & Global Grants Exchange.

 

Eric Friend and Art Vargas were home hosted by John Stewart and Jane.  John is wearing his Umpire face in the photo, but he says Foxy, the dog, was obviously happy!  Thanks to each of our Sunup club members who opened their homes to our Rotarian friends from Mexico who were attending the Mexico-USA Friendship Conference & Global Grants Exchange, which was held here in Prescott.

 

WARNING!  Don't mess with this lady!!  You don't want our Club Secretary, Stella Ortiz, to come gunning for you with her six shooter, if you miss a meeting or a service project.

Stella displayed the evidence of her marksmanship at the Saturday night Friendship Conference social event & dinner, held at the Blazin' M Ranch in Cottonwood.  Three of her six shots hit the bullseye!

 

 

 

 

District Governor Kevin Pitts welcomed the representatives from clubs in multiple Rotary districts in Mexico and Arizona to the 23td Annual Mexico-USA Friendship Conference & Global Grants Exchange, which was held this year here in Prescott on the Prescott College campus.   Representing Prescott Sunup Rotary this year were Todd Clancy, Stella Ortiz, A.J. Sheridan, John Stewart and Art Harrington.

Over the course of two days, on Friday and Saturday, the Rotarians listened intently to the presentation of fourteen (14) international humanitarian projects, all sponsored by one or more of the Rotary Clubs in these districts, and all vying for the pledged financial support of the represented clubs.  Then on Saturday afternoon, after all of the projects had been presented, and the questions about them were answered, large sheets of paper, with the name and number of the 14 projects, were posted on the windows and walls in an adjacent room.  At that point, the club representatives wrote their club's name on the sheets of the projects they decided to support, along with the amount of their pledge.  Then on Sunday morning, at the brunch held at the Hassayampa Inn, the conference leaders announced the total support pledged for each project, and they identified the projects which appear to have a sufficient level of support to move along toward obtaining a matching Global Grant amount from The Rotary Foundation.

One of the three projects selected by our club's representatives is a Rainwater Harvesting project, to benefit a low income housing section in Colonia Arroyo Blanco in Xualapa, in the state of Veracruz.  We have agreed that Prescott Sunup Rotary will serve as the International Partner for this project.  Our team is pictured here with representatives from the Rotary club sponsoring this project. The project, which will be located at a public health center in that neighborhood, is expected to benefit about 200 residents, providing a more dependable local potable water source during the year for these people.

Saturday night dinner at the Blazin' M Ranch in Cottonwood.  A good time was had by all, and no one left hungry — for sure!

Todd Clancy was caught popping the beer bottle tops and mixing it up on Friday night, as he helped man the bar.

 

 

 

We are extremely proud of  our Prescott High School Interact Club!  At the football games a week ago, they were selling "Party Hats for Polio."  The funds they raised go toward purchasing doses of the polio prevention vaccine — helping Rotary to End Polio Now!

 

Also last week our PHS Interact Club members were at Las Fuentes, helping to encourage and brighten the day for some of the assisted living residents.  The Interactors had created greeting cards during one of their club meetings, which this group took with them and gave to the residents.
