Tenney Brings Positive News About Prescott Schools

Clark Tenney, PUSD Superintendent, brought an enlightening and encouraging message to our club at Wednesday's meeting about the status of our schools in Prescott.  Because our schools are so respected, in spite of our population increase largely being due to older individuals with fewer children, and the presence of a dozen charter schools in the area, registration in our elementary schools has not been negatively impacted.  A number of students from outside our district's boundaries continue to choose to attend our Prescott schools.  With most of the charter schools not including secondary grades, their students feed into our high school, keeping its numbers strong.  Tenney also reported a lower-than average turnover in staff, even though our salaries are not competitive with those in other districts in the state, and in neighboring states, in which budget overrides have been approved by their voters.  One of the PUSD aspects of which Tenney is most proud is the higher-than-average percentage of our district's limited dollars which are allocated to classroom instruction, instead of administration. 

 

 

 

Our club member Steve Sample has been at Niagara Falls this past week.  While taking a morning walk along the shore of Lake Ontario, he came across this rock, bearing the Rotary logo and an important, thought-provoking question posed there by the local Rotary club.

 

This is a really neat idea, as well as a reminder that, wherever you travel in the world, Rotary is probably going to be there, working at meeting needs and changing lives,  With Rotary clubs in  over 200 countries and territories around the globe, it is true that the sun never sets on the presence and good work of Rotary.

 

This week our Rotary International Convention is meeting in Singapore.  Next year it will be held in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.  If you have never participated in an RI Convention, it is definitely something you should add to your Bucket List!  With tens of thousands of Rotarians coming together from all over the world, and plenary sessions being simultaneously translated into 7 different languages, nowhere can you ever experience and appreciate to a greater degree the internationality of Rotary.  

 

(Editor's Note: The first RI Convention that Sharon and I attended was in Calgary.  It was such an incredible experience that, before the convention was over, Sharon had already signed us up for the next one. To date, we have attended 19 of these RI Conventions, held all over the world.  And, yes, that included one which was also held in Singapore, the year I was the District Governor.) 

 

 

 

MEMORIAL:  We are reminding you that a Celebration of Life for our past Club Secretary Rusty Parker is being held this Saturday, June 1, at 11:00 a.m. at the Mt. Vernon Church of Christ, 120 N. Mt. Vernon Ave., Prescott 86301.

Pres-Elect Christy Manning made manning the Snack Shack a Family Affair last week, roping in her husband and two sons to help serve the Little League players and their spectator families.

 

Thanks to all of our club members who have taken their turns at working Snack Shack shifts this season.  While the scheduled Little League games end this month, we will be operating the Snack Shack again next month for the championship games.  Stay tuned for an announcement about those dates. 

 

 

President Laura presented our club's 2nd of three $3,000 college scholarships to Sienna Judy at Tri-City Prep Academy on May 16.
