Yavapai College's SBDC Economic Impact Explained to Our Club
Pres. Christy Manning, Marie Platowski-Beals, Karen Eads and Past. Pres. Richard Hernandez

Marie Platowski-Beals and  Karen Eads, from Yavapai College's Small Business Development Center delivered an impressive tag-team presentation to our club, reporting on SBDC's phenomenal economic impact data for our last fiscal year, 10/1/2023 – 9/30/2024. Take a look at these amazing numbers:

Business Starts              106
Jobs Created                  300
Customers Served        523
Clients Advised              401
New Clients Served      305
New Capital                    $10,296,875
Sales Increase               $8,374,875

It is no wonder this invaluable service of Yavapai College has won so many awards for their performance.  Marie and Karen took turns describing for us how the SBDC works, and the different types of assistance and guidance entrepreneurs can obtain by consulting and working with SBCD.

We also need to proudly point out that our club's Past President, Richard Hernandez, headed the SBDC, before he was bumped up by the college to another position; so much of its success has been due to Richard's capable leadership.

November is Rotary Foundation Month

RI President Stephanie A. Urchick’s article in the Rotary Magazine, titled A Solid Foundation, begins with her stating “One of Rotary’s greatest strengths is the ability of our members to come together to create lasting change, and The Rotary Foundation helps us transform dreams of change into reality.  From eradicating polio to building peace, much of the work we do around the world would not be possible without our continued support of our Foundation.”

President Stephanie says the cause of peace is especially important to her, and she points to our Rotary Peace Fellowship.  A new Peace Center, at Bahcesehir University in Istanbul, joins the seven other Centers for Peace around the world. These centers offer special curricula to train individuals devoted to peacebuilding and conflict resolution.    Our Rotary Foundation fully funds 150 fellowships each year for individuals who will become effective catalysts for peace.  Tuition and fees, room and board, roundtrip transportation and internship studies are covered at these eight universities:

  • Chulalonghorn University Bangkok, Thailand
  • Duke University  Chapel Hill, North Carolina
  • University of Bradford, Bradford, England
  • International Christian University, Tokyo, Japan
  • University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia
  • Makerere University , Kampala, Uganda
  • Uppsala University, Uppsala, Sweden
  • Bahcesehir University, Istanbul, Turkey

Since 2002, Rotary Peace Centers have trained more than 1700 Peace Fellows.  They now work in over 140 countries.

Your contributions to The Rotary Foundation help to make all of this possible.

INTERNATIONAL SERVICE

Our Xalapa, Mexico Rainwater Harvesting Project

This woman's grateful smile makes our work and funding of this project all worthwhile.  This is the mother of one of the familues which has received the rainwater reclamation system..  As Todd points out, "These houses have no faucets, because they have no reason to have faucets. The water coming from the system is funneled through a series of pipes; but the end is a simple garden hose that feeds into a steel bucket."  Basically , there is a switch she turns on, and the water comes in from the system outside through a garden hose into a large vat.   She was very proud to show off her new access to safe drinking and bathing water.  Until the other systens are implemented, she shares her water with her neighbors.

My grandson was visiting one day when he asked, "Grandma, do you know how you and God are alike?" I mentally polished my halo and I said, "No, how are we alike?'' "You're both old," he replied.
