Isaiah Spires inspires club with archaeology in "our backyard"
Isaiah Spires speaking on the subject of Archaeology in Arizona.

It is always a treat when one of our own club members presents a program related to their personal passion or hobby.  Isaiah Spires has degrees in Bible and Archaeology.  While admitting that most of his academic studies have been in Biblical Archaeology, relating to digs and discoveries in Israel and some of its surrounding countries, Isaiah revealed to us that he has also taken a keen interest in the Archaeology of Central Yavapai County, focusing on the Sinagua and Yavapai people who may have inhabited or traversed the Prescott, Chino and Paulden areas.

He had a fascinating presentation on where and how these people lived centuries ago in this area.  He showed us maps of where nearby ancient ruins can be found, along with pictures of some of these sites, including petroglyphs which he, his father and his son have explored in their numerous trips and hikes.  He also circulated samples of some the different types of pottery which have been discovered, assuring us that his samples had not been illegally removed from public lands.

Thank you, Isaiah, for a very interesting and informative program.  His presentation also inspired some really interesting childhood revelations by Dr. Whitney James and Pres. Christy Manning.  Who would have suspected?

What other members have something you would be willing to share with us about your hobby or special passion?

Let Tim Wiederaenders, our Program Committee Chair know, so he and the committee can schedule a program date to hear from you.
  CELEBRATING
WORLD INTERACT WEEK - NOV. 4-10

INTERACT is an international organization of service and social clubs for young people ages 12 to 18. Interact fosters leadership and responsible citizenship and promotes international understanding and peace. The name “Interact” was created by combining the words “international” and “action.” Interact clubs are sponsored by Rotary clubs as a program of Rotary International. Rotary clubs provide guidance and inspiration, but the Interact clubs are self-governing and self-supporting. Clubs vary greatly, with both single-gender and mixed as well as large and small. The membership base of a club can be drawn from the student body of a single school or from two or more schools from the same community.

The first Interact club was initiated in 1962 by the Rotary Club of Melbourne, Florida, USA. Two months later, the first Interact club outside the United States was established in Tanjore, India. Today, with more than a half-million members worldwide participating in over 25,000 Interact clubs in 120 countries and geographical areas, Interact is a rapidly-growing worldwide phenomenon, and the fastest-growing part of Rotary. Our Interact District 5495 is increasingly being recognized as one of the leading districts in the world of Rotary.  Art Harrington is the District Interact Chair, coordinating the 80+ Interact clubs in our district.  He also serves as the Chair of the Worldwide District Interact Chairs Association.

CLUB SERVICE
We are a growing club!

.
Club Membership Chair Sarah Van Bourgondien inducts two more new members: Traci Fournier and Vicki Mickel, warning us to watch out, since we have two redheads joining our club at the same time.  Since our scheduled Sgt-at-Arms couldn't make it, Richard coached our new redheads in serving as our substitute Sgts-at-Arms for the day.  They were up to the chsallenge, and they did a pretty good job raking in our money.

Traci Fournier is pictered with her sponsor, Marsha Teller.

A happy Vicki Mickel with her sponsor, Jane Anne Shimizu - who finally got around to inviting her neighbor to become a Rotarian.

Matt really rocks!!

Matt Greenlee is our latest member to be featured in a Rotary Means Business segment of our club meeting.  Matt, who owns Greenlee Designer Surfaces, came well-prepared with a handout and samples.  He began by instructing and quizing us on the different types of rocks (Igneous, Sedimentary amd Metamorphic).  His samples were slabs of stone which are used as surfaces in different applications.

Besides countertop products, Greenlee Designer Surfaces also provides wood floors, carpet, luxury vinyl, tile, backsplash, and does installation and restorations.  Good presentation, Matt!

We will have representation from the Prescott High School Flag Football team, as well as the Silver Wings from Embry Riddle.

Time to meet ? Will be in the morning, but will provide details when we receive them shortly. Sign up to participate on Marsha's sheet at this week's Rotary meeting.

OUR PRESCOTT HIGH SCHOOL INTERACT CLUB

PHS Interact has had a very exciting October! Our Interact was chosen to present at this year's Fall Leadership Conference for our district. At the conference President Sophia Brown and Vice President Ceiba Sherman gave a presentation on the structure of the PHS Interact Club. Sophia also presented on her trip to Kenya with her fellow ambassadors.

The theme for the month of Interact was the Purple Pinkie Project. Interactors set up a donation table at a home volleyball game and collected donations as well as spreading word of the importance of eliminating polio worldwide.

Interactors continued this project at PHS’s annual Trunk-Or-Treat event. At the event they handed out candy to the community and collected donations for Purple Pinkie.
Towards the end of the month the Rotaract sponsored canned food drive began.  As part of this, Interactors went out on Halloween and did Trick-or-Treat for Cans. Through this collection, Interactors collected more than 100 canned food items and non-perishables.

Now that it is November, Interact will continue to collect cans throughout the month. If you would like to donate to the canned food drive, donations can be dropped off in the PHS front office labeled for Ms.Cherry, our Interact advisor.

Some Scouts from the city went camping. The mosquitoes were so fierce, the Scouts hid under their blankets to avoid being bitten. Then one of the Scouts saw some lightning bugs. “We might as well give up,” he sighed. “They’re coming after us with flashlights now!”

in the Arizona Room
Speakers: DG Michelle Holcomb
Topic: District Governor's Official Visit

The Prez Says
Christy Manning
Thank you to everyone who joined last week’s meeting!  We were treated to two wonderful presentations:  Matt shared his knowledge on rocks, providing a fantastic introduction that led to Isaiah’s presentation on the Archaeology of Arizona.  Both were insightful and engaging, showcasing the diverse interests our members bring to Rotary.

Next week, we have a special visit from our District Governor, Michelle Holcomb, Michelle has been championing her motto, Rotary Means Business, and in honor of that, we’ll be including another Rotary Means Business segment from another one of our members.  It’s a great reminder of how Rotary supports professional connections while making a positive difference.

With Veterans Day coming up, I’m proud that we will be participating in the parade to honor those who’ve served.  It’s a reminder of Rotary’s commitment to service and our shared goal of creating a better world for all.

Looking forward to seeing everyone this week!
