DG Joe Sweeney Makes His Official Visit to Sunup Rotary

We welcomed District Governor Joe Sweeney, who was making his official club visit, as our speaker last week.  Joe shared with us his business and professional backgroud, and told us how he became a Rotarian.  Along the way in life he said he learned some valuable lessons, which he shared with us.  He encouraged all of our members to become more deeply involved in Rotary, and he especially encourged signing up to participate in the Rotary Connections program — which he highly recommended to both new and veteran Rotarians.  Rotary Connections consists of three 1-day interactive sessions with members of other Rotary clubs from around the state.  The next Rotary Connections (see details under DISTRICT NEWS) will be held at Glendale Community College on Saturday, Sept. 26, from 8:00 - 4:00.  Joe also made a point to appreciatively comment about the attractive, positive spirit which our Sunup Rotary Club has, which he encouraged us to do our best to always maintain.

CLUB SERVICE

At the conclusion of PDG Art Harrington's Weekly Sunupian Corner presentation, DG Joe Sweeney surprised him by asking him to remain up front for a special presentation of a Triple Crown Award.  The framed certificate and pin were in recognition of his being a Major Donor of $10K+, a Bequest Society Member of $10K+ and a charter Paul Harris Society Member of $1K each year, contributed to The Rotary Foundation.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

For Our Rotary Float in the Veteran's Day Parade

Judy Garner says our Immediate Needs include:

  • Assurance that we have a group willing and able to weld T-Posts and rebar to create the frame for the Eagle

  • Collection  of branches for the Eagle's nest

  •  Collection of newspapers for the paper mache

Without these, she says, we will not succeed!

Nelson Mandela: “Children are our greatest treasure. They are our future”.

Our Club’s Brand…really our Strategic Focus Areas are supporting children and veterans.  We have and will be making great strides in both areas last week and this week

Special thanks to the 12 Sunupians able to help set up the Healing Fields this past Thursday.  Was a great turnout and we were able to identify a need for some of our 3X5 flags in storage.  Our club will be working to partner with the Healing Fields organizers in the coming months to donate several of our flags, they are currently short 26 flags for next year’s event—we can fix that!

This week’s meeting will focus on our club’s impact on the children within our community.  Our guest speaker will be presenting information on two possible bond issuances up for consideration in November. Those bonds are centered on improving the Prescott School District’s infrastructure, increasing the number of educators in Prescott and better compensating those on the front lines, shaping our nation’s future.

Additionally, our club and foundation will be presenting a check for $3,000 to Mingus Springs Charter School to help them fight food insecurity. These funds will directly impact  1/3 of their students and their families.  Half of these funds were secured via a nomination by our board, later approved by the club, at large, back in April.  The other half were awarded to the club in the form of a District Grant.

HOT OFF THE PRESS—our Club Service Director, Sarah Van Bourgondien will be hosting a Sunup Rotary Halloween Party on 31 October!  Be thinking about your costume now, there will be prizes for the best costume and a fine for those that arrive as a “Rotarian😊.”

See you Wednesday!

 Warm Regards,

Russ
