Robin Bryce tells us about AI at YCC

We believe Richard Hernandez harnassed a whirlwind, which he brought to our club in the person of Robin Bryce, Yavapai Comminity College's Director of Artificial Intelligence.  WOW!  What a dynamic personality and speaker!!

Uppermost in the message Robin delivered to our club is the understanding we must have that AI is a tool, only as good as the people who have designed and contributed information to it; and that AI will never be able to replace humans.  She talked about the fact that AI has actually been around for some time, and she described many of the ways we have already been using it.  The picture below identifies some of the main AI programs being used and taught at YCC.  She had a number of good things to say about the capabilities of ChatGPT, and she described different ways she uses that program.  She also presented some of the Virtual Reality programs being used at the college, as listed in the second photo below.

INTERACT, derived from a contraction of "International" and "Action," is Rotary's leadership training and service clubs program for youth ages 12-18.  It is one of 3 Rotary-sponsored youth programs, with the other two being Rotary Youth Exchange and RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Award) camps.  Our district has 80+ Interact Clubs, with 25% of them serving middle school age youth.  Most of our Interact clubs are based on school campuses, where they are classified as extracurricular activities by the schools.  However, the majority of Interact Clubs around the world are commuinity-based, insteaad of being school-based..

Our Interact District's signature project is our Interact Crutches 4 Africa, with clubs collecting donated still-usuable mobility equipment (crutches, canes, walkers, wheelchairs, etc.), and shipping them to our Rotary partners, prmarily in Kenya, Uganda and Mexico, who give them, without charge, to the disabled poor, who have no other access to such mobility equipment. Our district is unique in the world in offering three levels of leadership training and service programs: (1) Club; (2) District; and (3) International.  At the District level, youth can apply to train and serve as a member of our Interact District Council.  At the Internatonal Level, they can apply to train and serve as a member of one of our Interact Ambassadors Teams, which serve in Mexico and Kenya,

CLUB SERVICE

Three more new members were inducted into our satellite Rotary Club of Prescott Valley at our last Tuesday's meeting. Congratulations to Steve Bracety (PV Chamber of Commerce), Isaiah Spires (Town of Prescott Valley) and Trevor Nordlin (Remodeling Contractor). Eighteen members are now on the roles of this new club.  Our goal is to increase this number to at least 25, before chartering this club as it's own independent Rotary club.  Confused about Isaiah?  Yes, he has already been a member of our Sunup Rotary Club.  However, since leaving his employment with the Hassayampa Inn, and beginning a new job with PV, he is now already at work at the time of our morning meeting; but he is able to make this new PV Club work with his new schedule.

Be sure you have saved the date: Sunday, June 22, for our Prescott-Sunup Family Fun Fest.  All hands will be needed that day.

Our club has purchased a popcorn machine and a rolling cart.  In addition to selling popcorn the day of our event, popcorn will be used to promote our Family Fun Fest at other events and activities around town.

Marsha also reminds us that Sunday, March 9, is the deadline for signing up for the joint clubs' Saint Patrick's Day Party.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

OUR SNACK SHACK TIPS, collected in a tips jar at the Little League games, are saved, with 100% of them going to the Little League to help with their equipment and other expenses.  Last year those tips totalled $311.75.  Snack Shack Chair Laura Vanderberg, along with her Snack Shack Team presented a check in that amount to a Little League representative at our meeting last Wednesday.

Along with presenting this Snack Shack Tips check, Laura announced that our Prescott-Sunup Rotary Club will be expanding our Little League involvement and support this year by sponsoring Coach Lee Richardson's team in the Majors Division, which we can help to cheer on at Bill Vallely Field..

They didn't like me critter sizing.

A professor was about to give his final exam.  “You must turn in your paper before 2PM.  I won’t take it a second later,” he said.  When 2PM came, students turned in their papers and the professor began to gather them and walk back to his office.
One last student jumped up and approached the professor.  “I’m sorry I’m a few seconds late.  Here’s my paper.”  The professor replies, “No, I made it very clear.”
The student retorts, “Do you know who I am?”
“No,” the professor replies, “I do not.”
So the student grabs the stack of papers, puts his in the middle and runs off!

As we say goodbye to February and welcome March, we find ourselves with only four months left in this Rotary year.  It’s incredible to reflect on all we have accomplished together so far, and yet, there is still much more to do!

March is Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene Month, a time to focus on one of Rotary’s key areas of service.  Clean water and proper sanitation are fundamental to health, education, and economic development.  Without access to these necessities, communities struggle with disease, poverty, and lack of opportunity.  Rotary has been a leader in bringing sustainable water solutions to communities worldwide.

March is also a time of renewal and transition.  With the arrival of spring in many parts of the world, it’s a great reminder that change brings new opportunities.  It’s a time to refresh our goals, re-energize our projects, and finish the Rotary year strong.  This month also brings significant global observances, such as World Water Day on March 22, which highlights the importance of sustainable water management.  Additionally, March is Women’s History Month-a great time to celebrate and recognize the contributions of women in Rotary and beyond.

As we move forward, let’s embrace the spirit of service and growth that March represents.  We have done so much, but there is still plenty to accomplish.  Let’s make these final months count and leave a lasting impact on our communities and the world.

I also want to let you know that I will be out of town this Wednesday, and Jane Anne will be running the meeting in my place.  Please give her your full support, and I look forward to seeing you all the following week!
