Sharlot Hall Museum enters new era under Director Stuart Rosebrook

We were privileged to have Stuart Rosebrook, the new Director of the Sharlot Hall Museum, speak to our club last Wednesday.  As a historian and writer, he helped us appreciate the contributions to Arizona's history by Sharlott Hall and several other prominent frontier women, along with the historical treasure we have here in Prescott.

The Sharlot Hall Museum is an open-air museum and heritage site located in our city. Opened in 1928 by Sharlot M. Hall as the Gubernatorial Mansion Museum, the museum that now bears her name is dedicated to preserving the history and culture of the Central Highlands of Arizona.  The museum grounds comprises almost four acres and includes 11 exhibit buildings, six of which are historic. This includes the Governor's Mansion built at its site in 1864 and listed in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Several historic buildings and structures were moved to the property, and include:

  • Fort Misery (the oldest log cabin in Arizona, built in 1864, moved to this property in 1934),
  • Frémont House (built in 1875, home of 5th Territorial governor John C. Frémont, moved to the museum in 1971),
  • Bashford House (built in 1877 and was the Victorian home of businessman William Bashford).

Additional historic buildings built on-site include the Sharlot Hall Building (stone exhibit building built during the Depression as a CWA project) and the nearby Ranch House.

Additional exhibit buildings include the Lawler Exhibit Center, built in the 1970s which houses the museum's pre-history exhibit; the Transportation Building, built in 1937 and houses the museum's rolling stock; and the School House, built as a replica to the first school house built in Prescott in 1868.

Sharlot Hall Museum also has a Library and Archives, located across the street at 115 S. McCormick Street. It provides full-service research opportunities through its vast collections of rare books and special holdings of original documents, photographs, maps, and oral histories.

Thank you to the following Rotarians for shopping and delivering food from our club for PASS:  A.J. Sheridan (January) and Richard Hernandez (February).

DISTRICT NEWS

We have become prisoners of our phones.
That is why they are called cell phones.

A three-year old went with his grandfather to see a litter of kittens.
On returning home he breathlessly informed his grandmother that there were two boy kittens and two girl kittens.
“How do you know?” his grandmother asked.
“Grandpa picked them up and looked underneath,” he replied.  “I think it’s printed on the bottom.”

Today I saw an ad that said "radio for sale, $1, volume stuck on full."

Sweet Talk for Valentine’s Day:

“Are you a chocolate bar?
Because you make my heart melt.”

“Is your name Google?
Because you’ve got everything I’m searching for.”

“If you were a vegetable,
you’d be a cute-cumber.”

“Do you have a sunburn?
Or are you always this hot?”

“Do you have a pencil?
Because I want to erase your past and write our future.”

“Are you a star?
Because your beauty lights up the night.”

“Are you a candle?
Because you light up my life.”

“Are you a coffee bean?
Because you’ve bean on my mind all day.”

The Prez Says
Christy Manning

We have some exciting things coming up! Our St. Patrick’s Day Party is just around the corner, offering a fantastic opportunity for fellowship with members from the other Prescott clubs, as well as the newly formed Prescott Valley Club. Let’s come together and celebrate!

Planning for Sunup Rotary’s Family Festival is in full swing, and we all need to do our part in securing sponsors to make this event a success. Your efforts in reaching out to potential supporters will make a big difference.

Additionally, we are currently collecting non-perishable food for the Yavapai College Pantry. Many college students face food insecurity, and our contributions help ensure they can focus on their education without worrying about their next meal. This is a vital way we can support our local community.

We are out there doing great things, and each of you should be proud of the impact we’re making. Thank you for your dedication to service!
