Bob Ticer, PVPD Chief, described for us what it was like growing up in Presott, later working for many years as a State Trooper in this area, and eventually coming "back home" to now serve as the Chief of the Prescott Valley Police Department. He described for us how the PVPolice Department is structured, and said he is firmy committed to the stated mission of the department. It is the mission of the Prescott Valley Police Department to protect and preserve the rights of all people through impartial, courteous, and compassionate law enforcement. Art Harrington, Bob Ticer and Pres. Christy Manning PVPD Chief Bob Ticer has a 19-year background in Rotary, having been a member of 3 clubs, including serving as Club President of one of them. Bob is interested in working with us to develop a satellite Rotary Club in Prescott Valley, sponsored by our club. Art and Christy wil be exploring this possibility with him and with our club board. The Rotary International Convention Since 1910, the annual Rotary Convention has combined fellowship with Rotary business and inspired attendees with notable guest speakers and entertainers, workshops, and messages from Rotary leaders. On 15 August 1910, Paul Harris convened the first Rotary convention. At the time, there were 16 clubs in the United States. They shared the Rotary name and had similar objectives, but no central office or constitution. In Rotary’s early years, the convention delegates debated and voted on changes to Rotary’s Constitution and Bylaws. As membership and convention attendance grew, this process evolved, and in 1977, the Council on Legislation became Rotary’s legislative body. The convention remained the main event for meeting friends, celebrating accomplishments, and discussing the future of Rotary. Many describe participating in an RI Convention as “the ultimate Rotary experience.” They are indeed a guaranteed opportunity to view the biggest picture of Rotary, with Rotarians from our 200+ countries and territories around the globe gathering together in one place. It is truly awesome! Plenary sessions are translated simultaneously in seven languages, and the House of Friendship always has booths and exhibits from an incredible number of Rotary Fellowships, Action Groups and international projects. The 116th RI Convention is slated to be held June 21-25, 2025, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. From Sharon’s and my experience of attending 19 of these Conventions over the years, we rate the Calgary Convention we attended many years ago to be the best ever. Canada does an exceptional job of hosting RI Conventions. Your August issue of the Rotary Magazine tells what you can expect this year at Calgary. CLUB SERVICE After finally being able to have the second knee replacement in her knee, which became dangerously infected after the first knee replacement, Stella Ortiz is still in CA, where she says the physical therapists will be pushing her hard for the next 2 weeks. After that, she is looking forward to being able to come back home to Arizona. She says, "The doctors are being very cautious with me. I completed the IV antibiotics and am now on oral for a month." We miss you, Stella, and we are looking forward to the day when you can finally be back with us! COMMUNITY SERVICE Healing Fields this Friday Marsha Teller, our Community Service Director, is reminding all who have signed up for this project that the flags installation for Healing Fields at PV Civic Center is this Friday, Sept. 6th at 6:45 a.m. She says we will be meeting at the Information Booth to sign in and, hopefully, to get a group photo. She reminds you to bring water, and wear your Rotary shirt and a hat. There are 3,000 flags to install, so you can stay and work as long as you want. YOUTH SERVICE Sophia's Update on Our Prescott HS Interact Club Sophia Brown, PHS Interact President and Interact Ambassador to Kenya Prescott High School Interact has had a busy start to their year! Over the summer and into the beginning of the year, our Interactors have been working hard to build Prescott High School’s first ever Peace Pole which will feature hand-painted ceramic tiles and the words 'May Peace Prevail on Earth' in English, Spanish, Yavapai, and Braille. Below are some Interact members at one of the work days held at Jarz of Clay. Below is Interactor Isabelle Brown loading cans for the food bank! Our first exciting school wide service project was our Back To School Drive! For almost the whole month of August we gathered school supplies to be taken with this year's Ambassador teams to Mexico and Kenya for the schools they visit. Pictured below are the supplies collected! Interact participated in Prescott High School’s annual Club Day and was able to spread Rotary's message of service and unity to our students! Pictured below are Vice President Ceiba Sherman and Secretary Amelia Vollmer at the club day table! Our Interact just had our first meeting on Tuesday and elected the leadership team for this year! Editor's Note: We have invited Sophia to give us a monthly update on what is happening with this outstanding Interact club, which Prescott Sunup Rotary is proud to sponsor. Knowing more about what our Interactors are doing should enable us to work more closely together on our projects and fundraisers. We will look forward to Sophia's articles each month in our newsletter. A rookie police officer was assigned to ride in a cruiser with an experienced partner. A call came over the car's radio telling them to disperse some people who were loitering.
The officers drove to the street and observed a small crowd standing on a corner. The rookie rolled down his window and said, "Let's get off the corner."
No one moved, so he barked again, "Let's get off the corner!" Intimidated, the group of people began to leave, casting puzzled glances in his direction. Proud of his first official act, the young policeman turned to his partner and asked, "Well, how did I do?"
"Pretty good," replied the veteran, "especially since this was a bus stop." __ DAFFYNITIONS
