For many years our Prescott-Sunup Rotary Club has been a financial supporter of the annual Arizona Cowboy Poets Gathering. One of the benefits of our club partnership with this wonderful Prescott event, which each year features Music, Poetry and Stories of the ranching and cowboy life here, and in so many other rural areas around this country, is that Jim Buchanan, who Chairs the Boiard of Directors, brings to us one of the Cowboy Poets or Musicians to perform at one our club meetings. This time Jim brought with him the delightful Cowboy Poet Amy M. Hale, who is one of the Saturday night headline perfomers this year. We thoroughly enjoyed hearing Amy's animated recitation of a number of her cowboy poems, based on her own first-hand experiences. Having spent many years on ranches in Texas, and now working for the local Spider Ranch with her husband, Gail Steiger, has given Amy all the fodder she needs for her writing. Her first book, Rightful Place, won the 2012 WLLA Award for creative non-fiction. She has followed that with three more books. Amy is also a past Gail I. Gardner Award winner. This 37th Arizona Cowboy Poets Gathering, which always draws some of the very best cowboy poets and musicians from around the country, is being held Thursday - Saturday next week, August 7, 8 & 9 . at the Jim & Linda Lee Performing Arts Center at Yavapai College. To purchase tickets for the different events and the evening performances, use this link: AZCowboyPoets.org/tickets/. Rotary Member Education How does a Rotarian learn about Rotary, and how to serve? Actually there are a number of ways, and numerous programs and resources are available through the Learning Center on the Rotary website, accessed via your "My Rotary" account. Best of all, though, are the in-person opportunities our club members are afforded by attending Rotary District Conferences and the Club Leadership Academy. In addition, our club's Program Committee schedules at least one Rotary information program at our club meetings each quarter. One of the most interesting, enjoyable and beneficial Rotary education programs is a grass-roots one which Rotarians in Connecticut initiated some years ago. It has been so popular and effective that it has grown and spread internationally. It is called the Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI). It consists of three one-day opportunities to meet with members from other Rotary clubs, and together to cover some basic Rotary topics. One of the most beneficial aspects is learning from other Rotarians what they are doing, and how their Rotary clubs work. A golden opportunity for our members exists on Saturday, August 9, when District Governor-Elect Joe Sweeney, and his wife Linda, with host, at their Prescott Valley home, a Level 1 session of RLI. The cost for each of the RLI level sessions is only $65. Our club believes RLI is so valuable and beneficial for our members that we will reimburse you that $65 registration fee, if you sign up and attend these sessions. Several RLI days are scheduled each year at different locations around our district, when usually all three levels of the RLI courses are offered. This time, though, in order to introduce RLI to more Prescott area Rotaians, Joe and Linda are hosting only a Level 1 course at their home. YOUTH SERVICE You won't want to miss the annual Interact Ambassadors program this Wednesday morning at our club meeting, Members of the Interact Ambassadors to Kenya and to Mexico teams will be reporting on what they did and accomplished this summer in these countries. Support Eric Boateng's Road to Recovery Interact Assistant Governor Eric Boateng, by pre-arrangement, left the Interact Dstrict Council Retreat early last Saturday night, in order to drive home to Anthem, for his parents to then take him to catch a flight from Phoenix to Washington, DC, where he was to atend a national youth leadership conference. Unfortunately, due to some reported traffic congestion on I-17, his GPS re-rounted him down Hwy 89A, to connect with Hwy 93, north of Wickenburg. It was at that junction he was involved in a horrific accident, from which he was airlifted to Phoenix Children's Hospital. There he underwent 6 hours of surgery on Sunday morning, repairing a badly-broken right leg and fractures in both of his feet, among other injuries. He is now recuperatug at home. He is in a wheelchair, and is undergoing physical therapy to enable him to eventally be able to walk again. A GoFundMe account has been set up to assist him and his family with the resulting enormous amount of expenses. Here is the link to that account, if you are able to help:
