Judge Danalyn Savage Shares Inside Look at a Judge's Role

Thanks to Glen Hammond for his persuading Judge Danalyn Savage to be our speaker last week.  She very candidly shared with us her personal path to becoming a Superior Court Judge, and explained to us the function of the Yavapai County Recovery Court.  This court's mission is "To enhance community safety and well-being of our community through reducing substance abuse offences by providing treatment and education that will encourage, support, and empower probationers to effect positive changes in their lives." While she also has other duties, Judge Savage monitors the progress of the participants through the course of the program. 

 

Recovery courts, which combine treatment with incentives and sanctions, mandatory and random drug testing, and aftercare, are a proven tool for improving public health and public safety.  The fiscal year 2023 graduate recidivism rate numbers are impressive: 94.0%, after 1 year, had no further felony convictions.  After 3 years, the number has been 82.1%, and after five years, 72.9%.  Upon completion of the program, 100% had a stable residence, 100% had improved health, 75% had stable employment, 100% had positive family relationships, and 100% had positive social peers.

 

 

The Rotary wheel has always been intended to be a working gear wheel.  Over the years, Rotary has become the most respected "can do" service organization in the world.  The reason is that our Rotary wheels are interconnected with other Rotary wheels on the ground in over 200 countries and territories around the globe — business and professional leaders who are committed to the same high ethical standards, and to working together with us to accomplish whatever needs to be done to solve problems, and to meet needs.  Each of us has our own set of abilities, experience and connections.  When combined with those of the 1.4 million Rotary and Rotaract members around the world, if something needs to be done, Rotary can usually find a way to do it.

Thanks to Harlan and Marsha Teller for hosting an Open House at their home on Saturday, thanking President Laura Vanderberg for her two years of service, leading our Sunup Rotary Club.  A highlight was the recitation by Laura of a collection of her worst jokes (groaners), which she used to open our club meetings.

JR RYLA gets underway this Wednesday, June 12, at Camp Wamatochick.  A number of our Sunup Rotary Club members will be serving in different capacities with this leadership camp for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade youth.  Bob Keys has been working hard for months, serving as Registrar.  Since Bob & Diane are traveling, Asst. Registrar Isaiah Spires will be handling the Registrar duties this week at the camp.  Clent and Josh Walker will be leading the archery program.  A.J. Sheridan is leading the low ropes challenge course, and Art Harrington will be teaching the Decision Making Course, based on Rotary's Four-Way Test.
