We enjoyed having Richard James with us last Wednesday to explain how the American Job Center at Yavapai College program, which he heads, works. He is a familiar face, since his wife is Dr. Whitney James.
According to Richard, this is a federally-funded program which is in partnership with the college. While it is primarily intended to serve veterans, he says the program is open to just about any lower income individual in our community who wants to improve their circumstances by training for certification in a different vocation, where they can earn a liveable wage.
Richard says the program includes:
• Career Services - Job search assistance resume and interview coaching, LMI, career assessments and planning
• Training Services - Tuition assistance for short-term training or certifications (Federal Pell grants must be utilized first)
• Support Services - Transportation, uniforms, tools, equipment, testing fees, and more
• Youth Services - Education and GED support, paid work experience, leadership development, tutoring and mentoring
Sarah reminds us that each of us has our own network of friends, and those with whom we do business. Who do you know who would appreciate your invitation to Rotary? How many times those around you have been watching your enjoyment from your involvement with Rotary, and have been wondering why you have never asked them to come as your guest, so they can check out Rotary for themselves. That invitation could wind up being the most appreciated thing you will do this week!

Laura is encouraging us to bring clothing items which veterans may need to our Rotary meeting, and she will take the responsibility of delivering those clothes to U.S. Vets.

REMINDER: The Mexico-USA Friendship Conference and Global Grants Exchange is being held in Orizaba, Mexico, the last weekend in October. We will be hearing more about this from Todd Clancy and John Stewart during our club meeting on Sept. 23.

While walking along the sidewalk in front of his church, our minister heard the intoning of a prayer that nearly made his collar wilt. Apparently, his 5-year-old son and his playmates had found a dead robin. Feeling that proper burial should be performed, they had secured a small box and cottonwool, then dug a hole and made ready for the disposal of the deceased. The minister's son was chosen to say the appropriate prayers and with sonorous dignity intoned his version of what he thought his father always said: 'Glory be unto the Faaather, and unto the Sonnn, and into the hole he goooes.'
