Scott Jech Gives Tips on Fire Safety in the Home

We appreciated the opportunity to have Scott Jech with us to help us better understand how we can protect ourselves and our families from the ever-present danger of a fire being ignited in our homes.  As Scott noted, there are a number of ways that can happen to any of us.  Making the presentation special was the fact that Scott is a charter member of the Prescott Valley Rotary Club, which our club sponsored.

One of the most basic elements of training Rotary's Leadership each year is the Rotary Institute.  Rotary is divided into 34 Zones around the world.  These Zones are paired, and each pair of Zones selects one of their recognized leaders to represent them for 2 years on the Rotary International Board of Directors.  Each year, each RI Director is charged with the responsibility of convening a Rotary Institute, where all of the Rotary District Governors — present, past and future — will come together for training.  The training always spans an entire week, with its multiple elements.  This past week, our RI Director, Wyn Spilller, convened our Zones 26-27 Rotary Institute at the Wigwam Resort in Litchield Park, AZ.  Our two zones include 30 Rotary Districts.  Last year's Institute was held in Albuquerque, and next year's will be in Reno.

 

Prescott Sunupians participating in  this year's Rotary Institute were Sharon and Art Harrington, Laura Vanderberg and Todd Clancy.  Art has been involved with the training for many years, in different capacities, and served as the General Chair of the Institute when it was held in Scottsdale, a number of years ago.  Laura was participatuing this year in the DRL (District Rising Leaders) program; and Todd, as the district's Global Grants Chair, was there networking with other district leaders in similar positions.

 

Todd didn't miss the chance to be photographed with Roary Bear, who was introduced as Rotary's new mascot.  (The bear's name is Rotary, with the "t" missing.)

 

We were especially proud of former Interact District Governors and Interact Ambassadors to Kenya, Colton Cagle and Bridget Mac Donald, who were featured in a special segment on Friday afternoon, recognizing the rising young leadership in our two Rotary Zones.  Larry Lunsford, who will be serving as next year's Rotary International President, spoke several times during this Institute.  In his major address on Saturday evening, he noted that we, here in Zones 26-27, "do Interact" better than anyone else in the world. It was an appreciated recognition.  Bridget is serving this year as our Assistant District Interact Chair, working with Art.
