Suzie Roth and Blair Runion, with Co-Pres. Christy Manning and Ives Devos

We appreciated having with us last Wednesday Suzie Roth, our County School Librarian, and Blair Runion, Youth Librarian at the Prescott Public Library, to update us on how our Dolly Parton Imagination Library program is succeeding in the Prescott region of Yavapai County.  They also explained to us  how the age-appropriate selection and mailing of the books actually works.

Years of research and dozens of studies point to the same thing: reading to children from the time they are born is critical to literacy development and academic success. Research also links the presence of books in a child’s home to early childhood literacy. Armed with this knowledge and united by the shared belief that our community should be actively engaged in promoting literacy a number of dedicated organizations, our three Rotyary clubs in Prescott teamed up a number of years ago to ensure that Prescott children have books in their homes.  As the result, families in Prescott and Yavapai County are able to register their children for the Imagination Library of the Prescott Area (ILPA) and receive a free book in the mail every month from birth until the child’s fifth birthday! The Imagination Library of the Prescott Area is an affiliate of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library , a nonprofit organization that coordinates the delivery of carefully selected, age-appropriate books to children throughout the U.S.

Our Rotary Motto has always been "Service Above Self."  We are People of Action, who practice what we preach!

CLUB SERVICE

Since Christy Manning was presiding at the meetiung, she thought she might be able to get away with sliding past the birthday celebrations time in the meeting — but Laura caught her, and insisted she don the birthday fun hat & glases.  Happy Birthday, Christy!  We love you!
