Working With Horses Helps Veterans & First Responders to Heal

Bethany’s Gait is a 501(c)3 non-profit ranch in Prescott, Arizona dedicated to “Rescuing Horses, Restoring Lives.” Our programs were created specifically for active duty, reserve and veteran military personnel, first responders, and their families. Their Ranch is nestled in Chino Valley, providing for a peaceful, private environment.

One of the things that makes their program unique, according to Christi, is that they are also a horse rescue. She told us they have found bringing the rescue horses together with the people offers a dynamic situation where horse and human heal through a bond that is developed based on unconditional love, unwavering trust and a keen understanding of what the other has been through.

One client, one horse, one Wrangler (mentor) is their philosophy for this program. Clients work one on one with an experienced Wrangler and the horse of their choosing. Through this program clients are taught how to care for the horse, how to work with them on the ground and how to ride. They work through four different levels of horsemanship skill – Mustang, Greenhorn, Maverick and, finally, Wrangler. It takes about a year to get through all four levels as we want the client to strive for proficiency and in turn have a feeling of true accomplishment.

Each session is individualized to meet the client’s needs and designed to help them build a bond with their horse. This leads to greater confidence, elevated self-esteem and a better understanding of what a healthy relationship looks like. They hold four 8-week session blocks each year. The program is open to adults and children 5 and over.

All club members should have received their personal "Let's Make A Deal" proposal letter by now.  Please remember that this club matching is a limited-time offer.  We had announced that your response needed to be made by March 31; but since our letters were so late getting to our members, it has been decided to extend that deadline to April 15 this year.  However, the sooner you get your check to Art, either by mail, or by bringing it to one of our club meetings, it will be appreciated.  Our goal has been to have a 100% Paul Harris Fellow Sunup Rotary Club!

Reminder!  Wednesday, March 20th evening meeting at the Lobby of the Hassayampa!  Social time starts at 4:45 pm.  Meeting starts at 5:15 pm.  (No morning meeting this week.)  Bring non-perishable items for the YC Food Pantry.  Free snacks, you buy your own beverages.  Feel free to bring a friend!

Sunup Rotary's Duck Derby Co-Chair Lisa Dougherty appeared on the KQNA Radio "Talk of the Town" show last Tuesday at 4:30 with host Marnie Uhl, President and CEO of the Prescott Valley Chamber of Commerce.  Way to go, Lisa!! 

Our Duck Derby will splash down on Sunday, May 5 from 10 a.m.to 3 p.m. at Watson Lake's South Boat Ramp. The duck race will be held at noon, complemented by food trucks, fun games and face painting. 
The Sunup Rotary Duck Derby will feature 5,000 rubber ducks, each marked with a unique number, which will hit the water and race in multiple heats following a big duck drop.
 
Go to www.duckrace.com/prescott to adopt a Lucky Duck for $5, a Quack Pack of six ducks for $30, The Whole Raft of 10 ducks for $50 or The Fly Over of 20 ducks for $100, for a chance to win cash and prizes. Adoption forms, including a QR Code, will be available at adoption events and select businesses.  Batches of these were also distributed to our members at last week's meeting.

Reminder!  Little League Opening Day is Saturday!  We have 4 people signed up.  If you happen to have an hour or two to help out, please feel free to pop down to the Bill Vallely Field and lend a hand!  The Snack Shack will be open from 10 am - 4 pm.  
 
Our Rotary Snack Shack will be operating on Tuesdays and Thursdays into May for Little League Majors.

Alabama
A group of Alabama friends went deer hunting and paired off in twos for the day. That night, one of the hunters returned alone, staggering under the weight of an eight-point buck.
"Where's Henry?" the others asked.
"Henry had a stroke o' some kind. He's a couple of miles back up the trail," the successful hunter replied .
"You left Henry layin' out there and carried the deer back?" they inquired.
"A tough call," nodded the hunter. "But I figured no one's gonna steal Henry!"
 
Georgia
The owner of a golf course in Georgia was confused about paying an invoice, so he decided to ask his secretary for some mathematical help.
He called her into his office and said, "Y'all graduated from the University of Georgia and I need some help. If I wuz to give yew $20,000, minus 14%, how much would you take off?"
The secretary thought a moment, and then replied, "Everthang but my earrings."

Mississippi
The young man from Mississippi came running into the store and said to his buddy, "Bubba, somebody just stole your pickup truck from the parking lot!"
Bubba replied, "Did y'all see who it was?"

North Carolina
A man in North Carolina had a flat tire, pulled off on the side of the road, and proceeded to put a bouquet of flowers in front of the car and one behind it. Then he got back in the car to wait.
A passerby studied the scene as he drove by, and was so curious he turned around and went back. He asked the fellow what the problem was.
The man replied, "I got a flat tahr."
