Prescott SunUp Rotarians - 2021 Veterans Memorial Cleanup
at the Yavapai County Courthouse Plaza
Prescott SunUp Rotarians gathered again this year to clean and freshen up the All Vets memorial at the Yavapai County Courthouse.  A large crew gathered on a beautiful Saturday morning to pull weeds, cut back overgrowth, clean railings, clean the granite platform and the memorial statue.  They also planted new flowers, reconfigured the drip irrigation, and spread new beauty bark throughout the flower bed.  And in keeping with tradition, the group sang the National Anthem and taps was played by Bruce Moeller to close out the event.  In the end, the memorial is ready for another year of dedication to those who so valiantly served our country.

The three Prescott area Rotary clubs (Sunup, Frontier and The Prescott clubs), in partnership with the Prescott HS and Bradshaw Mountain HS Interact Clubs, along with the Silver Wings Rotaract Club at ERAU, organized a massive three-day food drive for the Prescott/Prescott Valley area over the weekend. There were a total of eight donation drop-off locations that collected donations for the Yavapai County Food Bank and the Prescott Community Cupboard Food Bank. The Prescott area community responded with a generous outpouring of food contributions, as well as $2,000 in cash donations. The food drive was part of an Arizona-wide Rotary Week of Service, where Rotary clubs throughout Arizona organized service projects from April 17-25. Last week’s massive Rotary state-wide effort was the first of its kind and will become an annual event for Arizona.

On January 30, 2020, in a collaboration among the Prescott Rotary Clubs (SunUp, The Prescott and Frontier Clubs) and the ERAU Rotaract club, we hosted, the Kaluga Russian Dance Troupe under the auspices of the Golden Gates - Cultural Youth Exchange Program. This was a fundraising project for the Rotary Children’s Fund.
Dennis Light and Jerry Hulm represented the Sunup Rotary Club on this year's Carborca Polio Plus trip that took place from 2/14 - 2/16.  Approximately 140 children in local villages received the polio vaccine as Rotarians from clubs in Caborca, California, Washington, Wisconsin, Texas and Alabama assisted local nurses in this effort.  Also, approximately $14,500.00 was donated to the Caborca Rotary Children's Fund by the U.S. Rotary Clubs present.  These funds are used to address critical medical needs of children in the rural areas around Caborca.
Several members from Sunup Rotary and Prescott Rotary joined to help an elderly couple save their house. The county had deemed their house to be unsafe with too much over growth and debris hidden in the foliage. The disabled couple were within days of being fined up to $700 per day if not cleared. Rotary attacked and by mid afternoon several trailer loads were taken to the transfer station and the job was done. Thanks to Todd Clancy for organizing, Greg Barstad for trailers and trucks, Jerry Fohrman for excellent supervision of lunch, Also AJ Sheridan, Jerry Hulm, Bud Ackerman Par Wood, Barbara Oemcke, Terry & Teri Smith, Jim Huffman, ERAU Siver Wing students and many others. Job was well done and home owners were delighted and very thankful.
In 1989 Vietnam Veterans of Yavapai County erected the Veterans Memorial on the west side of the courthouse. Neil Logan a Vietnam veteran created the bronze statue. Tony Shaw, also a Vietnam veteran and Sunup Rotary member gave the original dedication speech in 1989.  The base of the monument is granite stone from the quarry the courthouse was built with in 1916.
In 2006 John Stewart of Sunup Rotary Community Service spoke to Yavapai County about improvements to All Vets Memorial. Sunup added night lights, sprinkler system, benches and handicapped access.  There was a re-dedication in April 2006 and Tony Shaw once again gave the key note speech.  Since that time, Sunup and Ken Lain from Watters Nursery have teamed up to refresh and restore the site each year. Each year plants are added and the irrigation system is maintained. This year the bronze veteran was waxed and polished.
